I was feelin' very much alive
And if I don't come back read a little Kerouac
It would be good for you, yeah
Now I'm stuck inside a line
Tryin' to find a decent rhyme
I loaded up my van and left the promised land
So tell me where did we go wrong
And give me one more chance to prove you wrong
I saw a monarch butterfly
Spread its holy wings and fly
Beneath the velvet sun
I watched her come undone and then disappear
So I got out my old guitar
And I dug down really hard
And then a voice inside said
I gotta ask you why you're still comin' here
And tell me where did we go wrong
And give me one more chance to prove you wrong
It's hard to say where love turns cold
We never thought that we'd grow old
We filled up fast and went down slow
Enough to fake us out and make us fold
Tell me where did we go wrong
And give me one more chance to prove you wrong
And tell me where did we go wrong
And give me one more chance to prove you wrong
In 'North On 95', Shawn Mullins takes listeners on a journey through his reflections and unanswered questions about love, life, and the road. The lyrics portray a narrator who is driving on a road trip, feeling the thrill of being alive, but also experiencing the pain of love gone cold. While they observe the beauty of a butterfly taking flight, they are reminded of the fact that things can unravel and disappear just as quickly. The singer attempts to channel these emotions into songwriting but is struggling to find the right words. They also question where they went wrong with their partner and wish for one more chance to make things right.
The lyrics of the song capture the essence of the human experience- the desire to feel alive, the pursuit of love, and the never-ending quest to find meaning in life. Mullins uses vivid imagery to depict the beauty of the journey, the complexities of relationships, and the struggles of an artist trying to find their voice. The recurring question of "where did we go wrong?" serves as a reminder to listeners that even when things go astray, there is always a chance to learn and grow.
