Their name was a tribute to Tara Maclean's sister Shaye Martirano who died on May 24, 2002, as the result of injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident earlier that day on the Trans-Canada Highway in St. Leonard, she was aged 26.
Shaye's debut album The Bridge (produced by Bill Bell and Jay Joyce) was released in 2003 on EMI Music Canada. The album features songs by Ron Hynes, Sinead Lohan and Crash Vegas. Support for the album included shows in Canada and Japan. "Happy Baby" the lead single, was nominated for Single of the Year at the 2004 Juno Awards. This was followed up by "Beauty" in January 2005.
Their 2006 follow up, Lake Of Fire was released on EMI Music Canada. It was exclusively available on iTunes in November 2006, then released physically in February 2007. It was produced by Jay Joyce (Patty Griffin, Tim Finn, Chantal Kreviazuk) and features songs by Van Morrison, The Waterboys and Ron Sexsmith.
On October 8, 2007, Tara MacLean announced that she was leaving the trio.
After MacLean's departure, Stockwood and Doyle announced on their website they would continue making music together as "Shaye". In 2009 Shaye's official website was redirected to MySpace where it was announced the band was officially no longer together. Kim Stockwood and Damhnait Doyle thanked their fans for all of their support.
Stockwood returned to a solo career while Doyle has formed a new band The Heartbroken which features three of the former members of Shaye's band.

Forgive a sweet soul a desperate deed
His was a prison and he was freed
Godspeed, Godspeed
God bless, God bless
What's born out of sorrow or out of distress
Speculation is anyone's guess
God only knows what takes a petal from the rose
What makes the dark rivers overflow
What makes a lifetime come and go
But God damn, God damn
You put your hand in the hand of the man
Must have believed he would understand
Forgive a sweet soul a desperate deed
Godspeed, Godspeed
God only knows what takes a petal from the rose
What makes the dark rivers overflow
What makes a lifetime come and go
God damn, God damn
You put your hand in the hand of the man
Must have believed he would understand
Forgive a sweet soul a desperate deed
Godspeed, Godspeed
Godspeed
Shaye's song "Godspeed" is a poignant reminder of the enduring power of faith and forgiveness. The lyrics describe the journey of a soul who has been freed from a personal prison, but finds himself desperate and in need of mercy. The refrain "Godspeed, Godspeed" serves as a plea for God's swiftness and grace in forgiving the singer's mistakes, as well as a wish for a safe and speedy journey ahead.
The lyrics also acknowledge the mysterious and often painful nature of life, with lines such as, "God only knows what takes a petal from the rose" and "What makes a lifetime come and go." The chorus "God bless, God bless" further emphasizes the need for divine intervention in navigating life's uncertainties, especially during times of sorrow or distress.
The song's final lines, "You put your hand in the hand of the man / Must have believed he would understand / Forgive a sweet soul a desperate deed / Godspeed, Godspeed," suggest that the singer may have committed a desperate act in the name of his faith, and is now seeking forgiveness for it. It also underscores the theme of trust in a higher power, and the belief that one's actions will ultimately be judged with compassion and understanding.
