The band split in December 2003, but not before a farewell tour which culminated in a final hometown show. The split was amicable and came about due to disagreements with their record company about their musical direction.
In 2005, they released a posthumous collection of demos for what would have been their fifth studio album. whilst the band members themselves began their own separate projects, including frontman Rick Witter, who went on to form Rick Witter and The Dukes .
However, in 2007 the band reunited for what was to become a sell out tour of the UK, and their most successful to date. The re-formed line up included all of the original members, including both of their former guitarists, Joe Johnson and Paul Banks. Although the 2007 tour was intended as a one-off reunion, the band remained together and were seen performing at several UK festivals during the summer of 2008. It was announced in mid-2009, shortly before a one-off headlining performance at the Tartan Heart Festival, that the band would again undergo a tour during December 2009 - they also revealed that they had been working on new songs, though none of these were played during the 2009 tour. The band classed their 18 date 2009 tour as 'their most successful and enjoyable so far'.
The band have announced a number of high profile summer festival appearances for 2010 including V Festival, T In The Park and Oxegen.

Where Have You Been Tonight?
Shed Seven Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And nowhere to go when you need to
I took to you
I took to you from you I drew
Nothing but a lonely smile
I want go out in the sun
But there isn't any sun
I want to change the way I look
Because I haven't any luck
And my brain is tired
Where have you been
If you hold me back I'll kick you in the shins
Until your night's on fire
It's good to be alive
Where have you been tonight
With the last cries of life
Yes we'll see
There is nothing to prove
Because no one can lose
But you will do
I took to you
I took to you from you I drew
Nothing but a lonely smile
I want to go out in the sun
And I want the sun
I want to change the way I look
Because I haven't any luck
And my brain is tired
Where have you been
If you stop me now
I'll push until you scream
Until the night's on fire
It's good to be alive
Where have you been tonight
With the last cries of life
Yes you'll soon feel the knife
With the last cries of life
Yes we'll see
The lyrics of Shed Seven's song 'Where Have You Been Tonight?' detail a sense of longing and frustration. The singer of the song seems to be searching for something, perhaps someone, but can't seem to find it. The repeated question "Where have you been tonight?" speaks to this sense of searching and not finding. The lyrics also express a desire for change, reflected in the lines "I want to change the way I look / Because I haven't any luck / And my brain is tired." This suggests a dissatisfaction with one's current circumstances and an eagerness for things to be different.
The line "If you hold me back I'll kick you in the shins / Until your night's on fire" speaks to a sense of defiance and a refusal to be held back. This fits with the overall tone of the song, which is a mixture of frustration and determination. The repeated refrain "It's good to be alive" suggests that even though things may be difficult, there is still a sense of gratitude for being alive.
Overall, 'Where Have You Been Tonight?' is a song that expresses a sense of yearning and a desire for change. It is a reminder to keep searching and to keep fighting, even when things are difficult.
