Lemon Tea
Sheena & the Rokkets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sheena & the Rokkets' song Lemon Tea describe a sensual and playful exchange between two persons, centered around the mixing of lemon with tea. The singer invites the recipient of the song to take as much of their lemon as they want, to pour it generously into their black tea, and to savor the resulting flavor, which is declared to be the "best lemon tea in the world." The process of making the tea is described in a way that verges on the erotic, with the bursting, ripe lemons threatening to overflow, and the sugar being added "plentifully" and stirred "slowly." The singer also comments on the effects of the tea on their partner, who becomes eager for more, unable to resist the "sweet and sour" taste of this "lemon tea."

One interpretation of the song is that it is a metaphor for a sexual encounter, with the lemon representing the singer's body, and the tea representing the sexual act. The invitation to take as much lemon as desired could be seen as an invitation to indulge in physical pleasure, and the mixing of the lemon with the tea represents the merging of bodies in a sexual union. The description of the lemons as being "ripe" and "bursting" with juice further emphasizes the physical aspect of the song.

Overall, Lemon Tea is a suggestive and flirtatious song that utilizes the metaphor of tea-making to describe a sensual encounter. The language is playful and suggestive, creating a sense of intimacy between the listener and the singer.

I was told by someone in Japan that it was written as a tribute to the Yardbirds original.

Saw them live in Tokyo about 2002 and they were great live in a club. Like most Japanese rock and punk bands that choke in the studio, their records were only so so and failed to capture the fun & spirit live. And this is a blatant rip off or tribute to Train-Kept-A Rollin' " NOT by The Yardbirds or Aerosmith but actually Johnny Burnette Trio. But I always thought Sheena & R. were always the best live band to ever come out of Japan.
