Letter To A Friend
Shelter Lyrics

The punks were never cool
But we didn't care anyway
And even in the scene
When it was cool to be mean
We walked the other way
Rebels from birth this world had no worth
But then you went astray one day
That you gave up the fight
And walked away; you ran away
We could of made that change,
We could of set this world,
This world on fire
What happened to your desire
How did you think that I would feel?
Didn't you think I was for real?
I know it's been so long since then
But It's time I sent this letter to my friend
We had dreams and schemes
That they laughed about
But we didn't care anyway
I feel hurt and confused
When I think of you
Where do you stand my friend is it too late?
We stayed up all night and talked about life
We seemed so sober those days
We stood side by side
And I don't know why you threw it away
What can you say?
Well I'm gonna make that change
I'm gonna set this world
This world on fire
Whou cares about your pretty desires
The "Letter to a Friend" by Shelter is a song that expresses the pain and sadness felt by a person whose friend has lost their way in life. The song begins with reminiscing about the past when the two friends were in school and how they didn't care about what others thought of them. They were nonconformists who didn't blindly follow the trends of the punk scene. However, one day the singer's friend decides to give up their fight and walks away. The singer is bewildered and hurt by the abandonment of their common cause, and wonders if it's too late to reach out and reconnect.
The song discusses the powerlessness one feels when a close friend changes their ideologies and direction in life. The singer is unable to understand why his friend gave up their fight and tries to rekindle their old friendship. The song highlights the theme of friendship, questioning its values, and how such relationships can be lost through the changing circumstances of life. Shelter seems to urge the friend to come back and fight alongside him to make a difference in the world. The song also touches upon themes of passion, resilience, and the fulfillment that comes from staying true to one's beliefs.

We were friends since school
We've been friends since we were kids
The punks were never cool
We didn't care if others thought we were cool or not
But we didn't care anyway
We were carefree and independent in our choices
And even in the scene
Even in the punk scene we were part of
When it was cool to be mean
When being mean was popular
We walked the other way
We chose to take a different path
Rebels from birth this world had no worth
We were always rebellious and felt the world was meaningless
But then you went astray one day
But one day you lost your path
And I don't think it's right
I don't think it's right what you did
That you gave up the fight
You gave up on what we believed in
And walked away; you ran away
You left without a word and abandoned our beliefs
We could of made that change,
We could've made a difference
We could of set this world,
We could've changed the course of the world
This world on fire
To bring about a revolution
What happened to your desire
What made you lose motivation?
How did you think that I would feel?
Didn't you consider my feelings?
Didn't you think I was for real?
Didn't you believe in what we stood for?
I know it's been so long since then
I know it's been a while since we last spoke
But It's time I sent this letter to my friend
But I feel it's time to reach out to you
We had dreams and schemes
We had aspirations and plans
That they laughed about
That others ridiculed
But we didn't care anyway
But we didn't let their opinions affect us
I feel hurt and confused
I feel hurt and uncertain
When I think of you
When I think about what happened between us
Where do you stand my friend is it too late?
Where do you stand now? Is it too late to reconcile?
We stayed up all night and talked about life
We had deep conversations about our beliefs and existence
We seemed so sober those days
We were serious and focused
We stood side by side
We were always together in our beliefs
And I don't know why you threw it away
And I don't understand why you abandoned it all
What can you say?
What explanation do you have?
Well I'm gonna make that change
Well, I'm going to keep working towards that change
I'm gonna set this world
I'm going to be the change I want to see
This world on fire
To bring about a revolution
Whou cares about your pretty desires
Who cares about superficial things when there are bigger issues to focus on?
