If It Makes You Happy
Sheryl Crow(셰릴 크로우) Lyrics

I put on a poncho and played for mosquitoes
And drank 'till I was thirsty again
We went searching, through thrift store jungles
Found Geronimo's rifle, Marilyn's shampoo
And Benny Goodman's cursive pen
Well, okay, I made this up
If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?
Get down, real low down
You listen to Coltrane, derail your own train
Well, who hasn't been there before?
I come 'round, around the hard way
Bring you comics in bed
Scrape the mold off the bread
And serve you french toast again
Okay, I still get stoned
I'm not the kind of girl you'd take home
If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?
If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?
We've been far, far away from here
I put on a poncho and played for mosquitoes
And everywhere in between
Well, okay, we get along
So what if right now, everything's wrong?
If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?
If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?
Sheryl Crow’s “If It Makes You Happy” is a song about self-discovery and acceptance. The lyrics focus on the idea of finding happiness in the small things in life and not worrying about the opinions of others. The line “I belong, a long way from here” suggests that the singer has gone on a journey, both physically and mentally, to find a place of comfort and belonging. The use of a poncho, thrift store shopping, and playing for mosquitoes emphasizes the simplicity and humbleness of the life the singer has chosen.
The line “Get down, real low down, you listen to Coltrane, derail your own train, well, who hasn’t been there before?” suggests that everyone has moments of self-doubt and destructive behavior, but it’s important to learn from those experiences and grow. The singer also acknowledges her own flaws with the line “Okay, I still get stoned, I’m not the kind of girl you’d take home,” but she doesn’t apologize for who she is.
Overall, the message of the song is to find happiness in your own way, even if it doesn’t conform to societal norms. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and embrace your quirks and imperfections.

This song hit me like a ton of bricks when I first heard it in the 90s, just as I was beginning to see my life for what it was. I was 26 and basically trying to make others happy at my own expense.
Hearing Sheryl belt out the chorus of this song was like an awakening, it brought to the surface everything I had suspected about my life. That was one of the catalysts for change over the next decade.
I will never grow tired of this song.
