Good Is Good
Sheryl Crow Lyrics

Watch out sister, watch out brother
Watch our children while they kill each other
With a gun they bought at Walmart discount stores
Welcome to the hallway metal detector just been installed, hey
Isn't cops and robbers gettin' to be a big bore?

Mary, Mary, quite contrary
Close your door now, it's much too scary
And you might see something you wish you hadn't seen
Out of sight, out of time
Out of patience, and I'm out of my mind
Governor, tell me what does it mean

Dance, children, dance to the beat
Want to be a hippy 'cause life was so sweet
Well, good morning, hate, yeah
Dance, children, dance to the beat
Want to rock and roll up and down the street
I've got a message
Oh yeah

Love is a good thing
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good thing
Love is a good thing
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good thing, yeah-yeah

Politicians on a mission
Bring 'em up, bring 'em down
For the good of the system
Well, we don't like the way you live your life
I got one thing I must express
We try our criminals in the press
Justice is a fading light

Mary, Mary, quite contrary
Close your door now, it's much too scary
And you might see something you wish you hadn't seen
Out of sight, out of time
Out of patience, and I'm out of my mind
Governor, tell me what does it mean

Dance, children, dance to the beat
Want to be a hippy 'cause life was so sweet
Well, good morning, hate, yeah
Dance, children, dance to the beat
Want to rock and roll up and down the street
I've got a message
Oh yeah

Love is a good thing
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good thing
Love is a good thing
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good thing

Love is a good thing
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good thing
Love is a good thing
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good, love is a good
Love is a good, love is a good

Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love

Love, love, love
Love, love, love

Overall Meaning

The song "Good Is Good" by Sheryl Crow is a commentary on the lack of love and unity in society. It starts with a bleak picture of children killing each other with guns they bought at Walmart. The resulting fear and paranoia lead to the installation of metal detectors in school hallways. The lyrics suggest that the media is partly to blame for the glorification of violence in movies and games, making it a part of everyday life.

Crow then sings about the increasing cynicism in society, where people are losing faith in law enforcement and politicians. She questions the validity of justice when criminals are often tried in the media and not in a courtroom. The chorus brings a message of hope and unity in the face of all these negative factors. Crow declares that "love is a good thing" multiple times, emphasizing that love can unite people, spread happiness, and overcome the negative elements that pervade society.

In the end, the song leaves the listener with a call to action, asking everyone to dance to the beat and spread the good message of love. It's a reminder that even in the darkest of times, love can be a powerful force for positive change.

Lyrics:
Good is good and bad is bad
You don’t know which one you had
She put your books out on the sidewalk
Now they’re blowing ‘round
They won’t help you when you’re down

Love’s on your list of things to do
To bring your good luck back to you
And if you think that everything’s unfair
Would you care if you’re the last one standing there

And everytime you hear the rolling thunder
You turn around before the lightening strikes
And does it ever make you stop and wonder
If all your good times pass you by

I don’t hold no mystery
But I can show you how to turn the key
Cause all I know is where I started
So downhearted
And that’s not where you want to be

And everytime you hear the rolling thunder
You turn around before the lightening strikes
And you could find a rock to crawl right under
If all your good times pass you by

When the day is done
And the world is sleeping
And the moon is on its way to shine
When your friends are gone
You thought were so worth keeping
You feel you don’t belong
And you don’t know why

And everytime you hear the rolling thunder
You turn around before the lightening strikes
And does it ever make you stop and wonder
If all your good times pass you by

When the day is done
And the world is sleeping
And the moon is on its way to shine
When your friends are gone
You thought were so worth keeping
You feel you don’t belong
Neither do I

Best Sheryl Crow song she ever wrote. First time I heard this song I was sitting on my chair on the dock in front of my grandparent's cabin during the summer in the afternoon having a cold one and watching this thunderstorm in the distance thinking to myself how precious life can be if you just stop for a moment and think about all the best times you had growing up and making the most of each day like it's your last.

@aaronw703

@ashley1994 I agree too. Love her music too and thanks for the reply. ❤️

Many years ago when my wife and I got married...we had a videographer who then went around the reception and talked to the people that were there and asked them if there was something that they would like to say to the Bride and groom. There were a lot of nice people at our wedding and a lot of nice thoughts that were shared.
But one that I will never forget was a little boy who was probably only about six or seven years old at the time and when the videographer asked him if there was something that he wanted to share with the bride and groom he smiled and looked down shyly and said one word.... he said “Good“.
I don’t know if I can describe exactly what that has meant to me from the first time I saw it. But that one, innocent, sweet, pure, thoughtful, kind, moment of....goodness from a child who could not possibly understand the enormity of what his wish meant to me.... almost felt like a message from the universe.
Sadly, although she eventually succumbed to her families issues with alcohol and it ended our marriage and ultimately her life...
Cathy and I were together for over 21 years and we raised 2 beautiful daughters who are my very definition of all that is “Good”.
I do not know who that little boy was or who he came with... or if he just appeared out of thin air for that matter....but I hope his life has and always will be filled with “Good” as well.

I don't believe that things come from the "universe," since I am devoted to God. But your sentiment here was beautiful and it made me cry. There are some moments in life that just stick with you in such a profound way – the depth of emotions it brings is beyond words. I'm so sorry to hear about your marriage and ex-wife. As somebody in recovery from alcoholism, it hurts my heart that you and your daughters lost her. But there is recovery, self discovery, self compassionate, and meaningfulness out there for people in addiction who want it and can find their way to it. It takes a lot of work, but it's a beautiful journey.

Incredibly heartfelt statement. May you be blessed again with the love you were able to find with her.
May she Rest In Peace
