Little Wing
Sheryl Crow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well she's walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that's running 'round.
Butterflies and zebras, fairy tales,
That's all she ever thinks about.

When I'm sad she comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free.
Said, "It's all right, take anything you want,
Anything you want, anything."

Well she's walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that's running 'round.
Butterflies and zebras, fairy tales,
That's all she ever thinks about.

When I'm sad she comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free.
Said, "It's all right, take anything you want,
Anything you want, anything."

Fly on, little wing.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sheryl Crow's song Little Wing offer a mesmerising and magical story of a girl, who is always lost in her unique and fantastical world. The song starts with a description of the singer, who is walking through the clouds with a circus mind that's running round. Crow then goes on to describe the girl's thoughts, which are filled with butterflies, zebras, and fairy tales - this is all that she ever thinks about. The imagery that Crow uses, particularly the "circus mind," gives an impression of a vast imagination, and the line "walking through the clouds" implies that the girl has a childlike innocence that sees the world in a different light.

The story then moves on to a situation where the singer is sad, and the girl comes to the rescue. She greets the singer with "a thousand smiles," and tells them that everything is alright, that they can take anything they want. This line suggests that the girl is selfless and empathetic. The story ends with the girl flying away, as the singer whispers, "Fly on, little wing."

The song's story is open to interpretation, and it resonates differently with each listener. However, the overall theme of the song appears to be that of escapism - a longing for a world that is beyond the one we live in, where things are more magical and simpler.

aside from his guitar expertise, one of my favourite thing about clapton is that he always shares the spotlight !!! no matter what concert you can always be sure to find him hand a section of a song over to another incredibly gifted musician !!! what a legend

Excellent cover of a classic! I love how fluidily they adapted thru this version, as Sanborn's solo goes on much longer than either Clapton or Crow thought it would. They step towards mics more than once and then step back...smiling and laughing as Sanborn just kept on rocking. They even sing over the very end of his solo...and soon after Sanborn & Clapton just share smiles. Its absolutely great seeing true artists enjoy each other on stage!

I, too, loved how happy Clapton was when Sanborn finally finished his solo-- which was totally in line with what Jimi did on stage quite often: one with his instrument, one with the music. And it just takes you somewhere glorious. That's what I suspect happened to Sanborn. I was so happy Clapton wasn't upset, but laughed and smiled. I wasnt expecting that!

Amazing version by blues rocker Clapton, country rocker Crow, and jazz-fusion sax genius David Sanborn. I love the looks on Eric and Sheryl's joyful faces as Sanborn lifts Little Wing into the stratosphere.

i dont agree, it misses the wildness Hedrix had and Clapton didn't had.
Even when they were young, Clapton was famous and Hendrix was new but Hendrix was way better and made Clapton very nervous, he didnt know what came in front of him.
