Run Baby Run
Sheryl Crow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She was born in November, 1963
The day Aldous Huxley died
And her mama believed
That every man could be free
So her mama got high, high, high
And her daddy marched on Birmingham
Singing mighty protest songs
And he pictured all the places
Where he knew that she'd belong
But he failed and taught her young
The only thing she'd need to carry on
He taught her how to

Run, baby, run, baby, run
Baby, run, baby, run
So run, baby, run, baby, run
Baby, run, baby, run
Past the arms of the familiar
And their talk of better days
To the comfort of the strangers
Slipping out before they say
So long, baby loves to run

She counts out all her money
In the taxi on the way to meet her plane
And stares hopeful out the window
At the workers fighting through the pouring rain
And she's searching through the stations
For an unfamiliar song
And she's thinkin' 'bout the places
Where she knows she still belongs
She smiles the secret smile
That shows she knows exactly how to carry on

So run, baby, run, baby, run
Baby, run, baby, run
So run, baby, run, baby, run
Baby, run, baby, run
From their old familiar faces
And their old familiar ways

To the comfort of the strangers
Slipping out before they say
So long
Baby, loves to run

And she's searching through the stations
For an unfamiliar song
And she pictures all the places
Where she knows she still belongs
And she smiles the secret smile
Because she knows exactly how to carry on

So run, baby, run, baby, run
Baby, run, baby, run
So run, baby, run, baby, run
Baby, run, baby, run
So run, baby, run, baby, run
Baby, run, baby, run
So run, baby, run, baby, run
Baby, run, baby, run

So run, baby, run, baby, run
Baby, run, baby, run

Overall Meaning

The song "Run Baby Run" by Sheryl Crow tells a story of a woman who was raised by parents who believed in freedom and fighting for justice. She was born on November 1963, the same day that Aldous Huxley died, and her mother was a free spirit who got high often while her father participated in protests in Birmingham. Despite their beliefs, they failed to provide their daughter with the guidance to find her place in society. Nevertheless, they taught her a valuable life lesson, how to carry on through tough times.

In the chorus, the singer is encouraged to "run, baby, run" from the familiar arms and their talks of better days, continuing to run towards the comfort of strangers who will not ask questions. She travels with hope, but with immense sorrow as well, as she watches the toiling workers from the taxi window, making sense of her life through unfamiliar songs, amidst a backdrop of old familiar faces and ways.

The singer smiles "the secret smile" of somebody who knows how to live, stirring the vision of the places she knows she still belongs, and picking up her pace. The song is a testament to the idea that in difficult times, one only needs to keep going to find their way.

Overall, the message of the song is about the struggle for individual freedom and about finding one's place in the world when the going gets tough.

2024... still here for it ❤

@malami001

Well, I guess nobody mentions it here: the lyrics are truly deep. It's about running from problems, from people, from closeness. The girl from the song feels nowhere secure or safe. She tries to run from familiar patterns, and by doing so, she repeats the pattern learned from her father.

@knightveg

if you're poor & the s*** hits the fan, you can't fight the system just Run, Baby, Run

@OaksArmorial

The word is spelled *truly*.

@trustinsynchronicity

It's about a girl who ended up with borderline personality disorder, running away from the rat race which keeps trying to suck her into it's vortex where most women end up, being a baby incubator with an apron on. She instead lives in her own world of fantasy and dissociation. That's why it makes me cry. It's a character portrait of my very life. It's not necessarily about being poor. It's about not wanting to be some ordinary wifey person stuck in some boring dude's life. Her father idealized her so she is too good for anybody. That's her secret smile. ❤

@Thelavendel

only a real snowflake like you gets it

@MrTheLionKing1986

Such a great song. She deserves much more credit for being one of the greatest singers/songwriters of the 90s. Great great artist!

@thefonzeful

amazing song. a hidden treasure unfortunately

@dougantelman2369

It amazes me that this song gets virtually no airtime on the radio and that it didn’t make the charts. It’s better than some of her more well known hits

@gogoyubari366

In your opinion.
