Second Chance
Shinedown. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My eyes are open wide
By the way
I made it through the day
I watch the world outside
By the way
I'm leaving out today

I just saw Haley's comet, shooting
She waved, said, "Why are you always running in place"
Even the man in the moon disappeared
Somewhere in the stratosphere

Tell my mother, tell my father
I have done the best I can
To make them realize
This is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Please don't cry one tear for me
I'm not afraid of what I have to say
This is my one and only voice
So listen close it's only for today

I just saw Haley's comet, she waved
She waved, said, "Why are you always running in place"
Even the man in the moon disappeared
Somewhere in the stratosphere

Tell my mother, tell my father
I have done the best I can
To make them realize
This is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Here is my chance
This is my chance

Tell my mother, tell my father
I have done the best I can
To make them realize
This is my life
I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Sometimes goodbye is a second chance
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Shinedown's song "Second Chance" depict someone who has finally made the decision to leave their current situation for a chance at a new life. The singer acknowledges that they have done their best to make their parents understand that this is their life, and they hope they can find the courage to let go. The singer also emphasizes that sometimes saying goodbye is a chance for a fresh start - a second chance.

The song's title, "Second Chance" has a double meaning; it indicates that the singer is giving themselves a second chance to start anew, but it also signifies that by saying goodbye, they're giving their loved ones a chance to let go and move on. The line "Sometimes goodbye is a second chance" strongly emphasizes that the singer is not leaving with anger or dismay; they're not escaping, but rather seeking out new opportunities.

The mention of Haley's comet in the song serves as a metaphor for the fleeting moments of life. The singer likens their decision to leave to the passing of a once-in-a-lifetime event - a comet that everyone has heard of, but only a few have the privilege of seeing. The man in the moon's disappearance also indicates that no matter how secure one might think their life is, there are always uncertainties.

Overall, the song speaks to the experience of change and the importance of taking chances in life. By acknowledging the pain of goodbyes, but accepting that they can lead to new beginnings, the singer finds the courage to let go and move forward.

@DriftingDraftsman

I love this song.

Sometimes you need separation to improve your relationships.

Feel this with Family, and Friends turned roommates.

It's such a shame, because there is so much love, somehow corrupted by frustration.

But with that space, you grow an understanding of yourself, and a deeper appreciation of those connections.

My husband passed away on the 6th. His organs were taken for donations 3 days later and the surgeon listened to Shinedown during the procedures because my husband loved them and most especially this song. His funeral is in the morning.
