Oblivion
Shinedown Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time doesn't erase
The demons you don't see
Still dancing in your dreams
Dragging up all the ways
Temptation's overgrown
Looks like we're all alone
Truth is karma don't lie
So let me show you why

Can't keep me here in the dark
I'll set you off like a spark
Into oblivion
(Into oblivion)
Can't shake me down to the bone
I'll turn you back into stone
Into oblivion

Rise, wrath of the rage
Those spineless spirits bleed
Behold the alchemy
Crawling out of my skin
Shed every trace of you
Just one last thing to prove

Truth is karma don't lie
So let me show you why

Can't keep me here in the dark
I'll set you off like a spark
Into oblivion
Into oblivion
Can't shake me down to the bone
I'll turn you back into stone
Into oblivion
Into oblivion
Can't keep me here in the dark
I'll set you off like a spark
Into oblivion

Ayy-oh
Ayy-oh
Ayy-ah

Ayy-oh
Ayy-oh
Ayy-ah

Ayy-oh
Ayy-oh
Ayy-ah

So let me show you why

Can't keep me here in the dark
I'll set you off like a spark
Into oblivion
(Into oblivion)
Can't shake me down to the bone
I'll turn you back into stone
(Into oblivion
Into oblivion)

Can't keep me here in the dark
I'll set you off like a spark
Into oblivion
(Into oblivion)
Can't shake me down to the bone

I'll turn you back into stone
Into oblivion

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Shinedown's song Oblivion are a reflection of the toll that past mistakes can take on our psyche. The first verse speaks of the haunting nature of our demons that we cannot see, yet they continue to visit us in our dreams. The temptation to succumb to these demons is strong, and it seems that we are alone in this struggle. However, the truth is that karma always catches up with us, hence it's essential to learn from our mistakes and let go of our past.

The chorus is a reflection of the power that we hold when we conquer these demons. It's an empowering statement that speaks of the singer's inability to be defeated. He might have been in the dark for a while, but he is rising and setting off like a spark into oblivion. The repetition of the phrase "into oblivion" is a metaphor for leaving the past behind and moving forward. However, the singer warns that anyone who tries to bring him down again will be turned back into stone, meaning they will face the same consequences that they inflicted upon him.

Overall, the lyrics of Oblivion speak of the power of conquering our demons, moving forward, and learning from our past mistakes. It's a reminder that we hold the power, and we determine our destiny.

These boys got it seriously going on. I rate them as one of the greats. Right up there and even beyond Zeppelin, Deep Purples, Floyd, Yes and so on. Plus these boys are not only mega talented but wise beyond their years. They know exactly what's going on and make no bones about telling us so. I'm 70 years and I have to hear them virtuously every day. Thank God for this band. Thanks for doing what you do.

Led Zep was my favorite band all my life. The greatest band of all time, in my opinion. But Shinedown has been my favorite band for over 10 years now! and never a bad song

@RobIdyBob

Shinedowns definitely in top 5 for me! They keep it real, and are so underrated! If I had the social influence, I'd make sure everyone jammed to them

@tinytim8693

They are right when they say, "Once a Shindown Fan, always a Shinedown Fan." Their music just never gets old. 😝🤘
