With this line up, the band found themselves sharing the stage with Season To Risk, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Jesus Lizard, Girls Against Boys and Jawbox among others before DeSoto Records released their debut EP "Brooks" b/w "Released" 7" in 1993.
Following Shiner's first album Splay also put out by DeSoto, Paul Malinowski took over for bass duties after departing with Season To Risk in 1995. With HitIt! Recordings releasing their second full-length Lula Divinia two years later, Sub Pop took notice and followed with the single "Sleep it Off"/ "Half Empty" that same year. After a brief tour with HUM in 1998, yet another single "Semper Fi" b/w "Sailor's Fate" 7" came out a year after. With Jason Gerken taking over dums and Josh Newton manipulating the guitar, a third full-length studio effort Starless was released in fall 2000, and the band's swansong The Egg was released in 2001 hinting at a more experimental sound.

The Egg
Shiner Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Three break leaving two that strain to barely breathe.
There's one left, but he can't notice.
He's hoping for an Egg.
Five wheels chosen for their need for untold speed.
Three break leaving two more, straining just to breathe.
There's one now, he can't notice.
He's waiting on his Egg.
Five wheels, stolen for their skill at breakneck speed.
Three break leaving two more straining at the leash.
There's one now, he can't notice,
until he's found his Egg.
And it hangs there spinning
and brightly glowing.
And he can't stop laughing
and his palms keep sweating.
And he can't stop dreaming
of cradling his Egg.
Five wheels, chosen for their skill at breakneck speed.
Three break leaving two that strain to barely breathe.
But there's one now, he can't notice.
He's almost got his Egg.
Five wheels, stolen for their need for untold speed.
Three break leaving two more straining just to breathe.
There's one now but he can't notice.
He's cradling his Egg.
And it hangs there spinning
and brightly glowing.
And he can't stop laughing
and his palms keep sweating.
And it's spinning faster
and flowing brighter.
And he can't stop dreaming
of cradling his Egg.
The lyrics of Shiner’s song The Egg depict a story of a race where five wheels are chosen or stolen for their skill at breakneck speed. However, only two wheels are left that are struggling to breathe. The singer of the song is hoping for his “Egg”, which is a metaphor for a prize or a reward. The song depicts the desperation of the singer who wants nothing more than the Egg.
As the song progresses, the singer finds his Egg, and he can’t stop laughing while his palms keep sweating. This is significant because this suggests that the singer has been working towards achieving this goal for a long time and finally, he has it in his grasp. The Egg is spinning and brightly glowing, and the singer is dreaming of cradling it. The lyrics signify that the Egg is worth all the struggle and hard work.
The song is open to interpretation, but it suggests that the Egg represents a personal goal that the singer has been striving for, and the struggle to get there was worth the prize. Overall, the song is powerful with its metaphors and imagery, encouraging the listener to persist despite struggles.
