Animal
Shining Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well it′s midnight, damn right
The animal comes out!
Screaming like a demon
Knock knock, let me out

Now three, two, one, drink another one
Get me closer to God
Howling like a banshee
Crawling up the ceiling
It's a spiritual healing

Animal haunts my soul
When night falls, it′s hardcore
It rises up and takes control
That's when I become a fucking animal, ah!

Well I'm out for blood
And everything that moves
Come on!
Anything that breathes
Anything with heat
Makes me strong

Now, for tonight
Lust is in the driver′s seat
Heart is in the front
Brain is in the back
Regret is in the trunk

Animal haunts my soul
When night falls, it′s hardcore
It rises up and takes control
That's when I become a fucking animal, ah!

I become an animal, ah!

Can you hear it screaming inside?
Take me up to heaven for a while
Taste my blood and take the ride
I get my fix then return to the night
′Cause I'm an animal!

Animal haunts my soul
When night falls, it′s hardcore
It rises up and takes control
That's when we all become a fucking animal, ah!

I′m a fucking animal (animal), ah!

I'm a fucking animal!

Overall Meaning

The song "Animal" by Shining is a raucous and explosive track that speaks to the wild and primal nature that lurks within everyone. The lyrics describe a nighttime transformation that takes hold of the singer, as they become possessed by their inner animal. The first verse sets the tone for the song with the declaration "Well it's midnight, damn right, the animal comes out!" The lyrics suggest that something about the darkness and the witching hour releases a part of the singer that they keep hidden during the day.

As the song progresses, the lyrics become more frenzied and chaotic, with descriptions of howling like a banshee and crawling up the ceiling. The lyrics create an image of someone who is completely consumed by their animalistic desires, with the need for blood and the lust for anything that moves. The singer declares that their heart is in the front and their brain is in the back, emphasizing the idea that rational thought has left them and they're operating purely on instinct.

The song seems to suggest that everyone has an inner animal that they keep suppressed during the day, but at night it comes out to play. It could be interpreted as a commentary on how society tries to repress our primal nature, but it's always bubbling just beneath the surface. Overall, the lyrics to "Animal" create an intense and thrilling picture of someone who has given into their base desires and is operating purely on instinct.

@d Bass I didn't think it was terrible, but it wasn't too interesting to me. It's not that something's wrong with it, there just wasn't enough there to pull me in.

My earlier comment was more of a general one. I see comments like that all the time and people using it like their own personal motto. "Haters just remind me I'm doing the right thing". It's just bullshit. Maybe they are doing the right thing, maybe they aren't. I just don't think the degree of hate is the best barometer of success, it just rubs me as someone desperately trying to be optimistic and turn a negative into a positive, but it's missing a logical link between hate and success.

Look at Metallica's St. Anger album. I suppose if we could go back in time, you'd be saying "All this backlash is just proof they're doing exactly what they should be doing".

I will concede one portion of this - Highly successful people, products, albums..etc do receive hate. But that's just because their success resulted in them catching the attention of a much wider net of people, and it's inevitable that some of them will hate it. But to take that and conclude that criticism = doing something right I think is missing the point. If it's 99% hate and 1% praise, I'm not sure that's a good ratio, especially if it's not getting any attention.

It's hard to believe this is the band who recorded "Fisheye".

@dbass4973

its easy to see how this is the band which recorded asa nisi masa some 12 years ago, as there is only one remaining member of the band. personally i consider him to be an avant rock genius along with Fripp, Patton, Buckethead, Zorn etc
