Chad Petree and Jeremy Dawson grew up in Oklahoma and were involved in previous music projects together, including the soundtrack for the videogame Grand Theft Auto III in 2000 and Cloud2Ground. After relocating to Los Angeles, California in 2004, the two recruited vocalist Carah Faye Charnow and drummer Mikey Martin.
Their debut album, We Are Pilots was originally released in January 2005, though versions of the album featuring different cover art and tracklisting would be released later the following year. Three singles were issued: "Le Disko", "You Are the One" and "Rainy Monday". We Are Pilots received a Grammy Award nomination on 6 December 2007 in the category of Best Electronic/Dance Album, but lost to The Chemical Brothers.
The band's second studio album, Season of Poison, was released on 4th November 2008, with Sisely Treasure as vocalist. They have released two singles from their second album: "Ghost Town" and "Ricochet!".
In 2009, Shiny Toy Guns released "Major Tom", a Peter Schilling cover.
In 2011, Carah Faye Charnow returned to Shiny Toy Guns. In addition, Daniel Johansson also joined the band on guitar, synth and bass. In March 2011, the band released a new single "The Sun", available to download for free.
In May 2012 the band announced that Daniel Johansson left the band.

Don't Cry Out
Shiny Toy Guns Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I can't forget what you've forgotten
All along
I've never been so alone
Don't cry out
Cease fire
Your secret kiss of confidence
Was my escape
The perfect game to play
Don't cry out
Cease fire
Ten nine eight and I'm breaking away
I'm all dressed up and ready to play
Seven six five four and I'm all over you
Counting three two one and I'm having fun
Your fascination
With naked walls of silk and skin with no conditions
I needed you to notice
That's all I wanted
Don't cry out
Cease fire
Ten nine eight and I'm breaking away
I'm all dressed up and ready to play
Seven six five four and I'm all over you
Counting three two one and I'm having fun
Ten nine eight and I'm breaking away
I'm all dressed up and ready to play
Seven six five four and I'm all over you
Counting three two one and I'm having fun
Don't cry out
Cease fire
Ten nine eight and I'm breaking away
I'm all dressed up and ready to play
Seven six five four and I'm all over you
Counting three two one and I'm having fun
In "Don't Cry Out" by Shiny Toy Guns, the singer seems to be struggling to understand someone they were once very close to. The first two lines of the song, "I don't get you / I can't forget what you've forgotten," suggest that the singer cannot understand why this person is acting the way they are, but also that they cannot move on from this relationship. Despite being around other people, the singer feels incredibly alone. It almost seems as if they are intentionally isolating themselves as they try to process their feelings for this other person.
The chorus of the song ("Don't cry out / Cease fire") seems to suggest that this person is trying to distance themselves from the one they don't understand. They don't want to engage in any fights or arguments, rather they want peace and silence.
The rest of the song describes this complicated relationship. The singer was pretending that their relationship was more than it was, hoping that their feelings would be reciprocated. They describe it as a "perfect game to play." The other person has some sort of fascination with "naked walls of silk and skin with no conditions," but the singer just wanted to be noticed by them. The repeated refrain of "Ten nine eight and I'm breaking away / I'm all dressed up and ready to play / Seven six five four and I'm all over you / Counting three two one and I'm having fun" suggests a sense of empowerment as the singer decides to take control of their situation and move on from this relationship.
