Mexico
Shirazi Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Flames blow away our memories up in smoke
And now it's time
For miles and miles
And I'll be going until I just run out of road
If you are looking for me
I'll be in the land of the free
Nobody there is guilty
By the time you know
That your love's gone
I'll be down down down down
In Mexico
Suitcase packed no letters and away I go
Flames blow away our memories up in smoke
And now it's time
For miles and miles
And I'll be going until I just run out of road
If you are looking for me
I'll be in the land of the free
Nobody there is guilty
By the time you know
That your love's gone
I'll be down down down down
In Mexico
Shirazi's song "Mexico" expresses the idea of running away in order to escape past memories and heartbreak. The lyrics suggest the artist's sense of hopelessness and desire to escape. The opening line "suitcase packed no letters and away I go, flames blow away our memories up in smoke" suggests that the artist is leaving behind all physical and emotional traces of the past. The phrase "up in smoke" signifies how easily memories can disappear or fade away. The artist's resolve is reflected in the phrase "and now it's time for miles and miles, and I'll be going until I just run out of road". The repetition of the phrase "I'll be down down down down in Mexico" seems to suggest that the artist has found solace in the idea of escape.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of personal freedom. The artist suggests that in Mexico, "nobody there is guilty". This could indicate the artist's desire to experience a sense of liberation from past struggles and to live without judgement. The chorus "if you are looking for me, I'll be in the land of the free" further emphasises the idea of the freedom one can find by running away. The overall impression is that the artist has chosen to take a step away from the past and toward a new sense of freedom.
