All by Myself
Shirley Bassey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was young I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun, those days are gone

Living alone, I think of all the friends I've known
But when I dial the telephone, nobody's home

All by myself, don't wanna be all by myself anymore
All by myself, don't wanna live all by myself anymore

Hard to be sure, sometimes I feel so insecure
And love so distant and obscure, remains the cure

All by myself, don't wanna be all by myself anymore
All by myself, don't wanna live all by myself anymore

When I was young I never needed anyone
And making love was just for fun those days are gone

All by myself, don't wanna be all by myself anymore
All by myself, don't wanna live all by myself anymore

All by myself, don't wanna be all by myself anymore
All by myself, don't wanna live all by myself anymore

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Shirley Bassey's song "All By Myself" are a poignant portrayal of the loneliness that comes with living alone. In the first verse, the singer reflects on her younger days when she didn't need anyone and making love was just for fun. However, as time has gone on, she has realized that she needs companionship and connection with others. The chorus repeats the phrase "don't wanna be all by myself anymore" twice, emphasizing the singer's desire to break free from her isolation and find meaningful relationships.

In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that it can be difficult to find love and companionship - she feels "so insecure" and "love so distant and obscure". However, she also recognizes that the cure for this loneliness is to find someone to share life with. The final repetition of the chorus is particularly powerful, as the singer repeats "don't wanna be all by myself anymore" four times, emphasizing the urgency of her desire to find companionship.

Overall, "All By Myself" is a heartfelt portrayal of the need for human connection and the loneliness that can come with living alone. The repetition of the chorus underscores the urgency of this desire for connection, while the verses skillfully paint a picture of the singer's journey from self-sufficiency to a recognition of her need for others.

Me encanta Shirley bassey

Dawud Jibreel

Shes a fantastic technical singer, but this heartfelt song required a heartfelt and emotive vocal. Someone who can connect with the sentiment in the lyrics and elevate them through their vocal treatment. Simply belting with power whilst feigning sadness with a dramatic frown isn't enough. Too melodramatic and focused on impressing rather than expressing.

Mỹ Hà's Vocal Evaluation

Emotive is subjective, her vocal is absolutely gorgeous to me, strong and powerful, covered sound, warm and thick, not overly pop bright and nasal

Dawud Jibreel

@myhavocal  Completely understand that which is why I praised the objective factors before giving my opinion on the subjective elements of this performance. If you were taken in by her singing then I'm happy for you. I found it lacking in sincerity and verging on theatrical whilst remaining technically excellent. Each to their own.

Meomeow

yup the obejective part is that she deliver better technique than celine dion version, the emotion is opinion
