In late 2009 Bassey released 'The Performance' her first studio album for two decades, which was released in a maelstrom of anticipation. The Man That Got Away

The stars have lost their glitter,
The winds grow colder,
And suddenly you're older
And all because of
The man that got away.
No more his eager call,
The dreams you dreamed have all
Gone astray.
The man that won you
Has run off and undone you.
That great beginning
Has seen it's final inning,
Don't know what happened
It's all a crazy game.
No more that all-time thrill
For you've been through the mill,
And never a new love will
Be the same.
Good riddance, good-bye.
Every trick of his you're on to
But fools will be fools and where's he gone to?
The road gets rougher,
It's lonelier and tougher.
With hope you burn up,
Tomorrow he may turn up.
There's just no letup
The livelong night and day.
Ever since this world began
There is nothing sadder than
A one-man woman
Looking for the man that got away
The road gets rougher,
It's lonelier and tougher.
With hope you burn up,
Tomorrow he may turn up.
There's just no letup
The livelong night and day.
Ever since this world began
There is nothing sadder than
A one-man woman
Looking for the man
The man that got away
The man that got away
The lyrics of Shirley Bassey's powerful song "The Man That Got Away" explore the pain and heartbreak that can come with lost love. The first verse sets the scene with its vivid imagery of a bitter night: the stars have lost their glitter and the winds have grown colder. The singer then acknowledges the passing of time and the fact that, because of the man that got away, suddenly everything seems harder and they are forced to confront the cold reality of being alone.
In the second verse, the singer reflects on the end of their past relationship. They note how the man they thought had won them has instead caused them to come undone, and that the great beginning they once shared has now come to a sad end. The sadness is compounded by the fact that the singer can't explain what happened, as if it were all just part of a crazy game. As the song progresses, the singer becomes more and more desperate, hoping against hope that their former lover might come back to them, but acknowledging that the road ahead is only going to get tougher.
Overall, the song speaks to a universal experience of heartbreak, regret, and longing for something that has been lost. Through the powerful vocals and emotive lyrics, Bassey captures the pain of losing love and the struggle to move on.
