Shocking Blue's by far biggest hit was Venus, which went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in February 1970. 'Venus' returned to the top of the U.S. charts in 1981 as part of the Stars on 45 Medley and was also successfully covered by artists such as Greece's Olympians (1970), Bananarama (1986), Japanese singer Yoko Nagayama (1986).
Nirvana covered the song Love Buzz for their debut album Bleach in 1989, and it was released as their first single. The British Group The Prodigy also sampled Love Buzz for their song 'Phoenix' on their 2004 album Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned.
Before 'Venus' the group had only had two minor Dutch hits in 1969: Long Lonesome Road and Send Me A Postcard. In 1970 two more hits followed: Mighty Joe and Never Marry A Railroad Man, the latter almost provoking a strike by workers on the London Underground when posters advertising the single in the Underground stations were put on display.
Shocking Blue had several more hits in The Netherlands and beyond. The group started to dissolve in 1973 when Van Leeuwen called it quits. Singer Mariska Veres left the group to start a solo-career in 1974 and Shocking Blue folded.
Mariska Veres died on December 2nd, 2006, after a short battle with cancer. She was just 59 years old.

I'll Write Your Name Through the Fire
Shocking Blue Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name to bring me home again
I'll write your name through the fire
And I'm standing there at edge of town
Gonna get cold when the sun goes down
Saddle my horse and I'm packin' my clothes
Where I'm goin' just the good Lord knows
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name to bring me home again
I'll write your name through the fire
When mornin' breaks yes I'll be gone
And where I go I don't know
Have a lonely mind and a lonely heart
Wounded by your love dart
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name to bring me home again
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name to bring me home again
I'll write your name through the fire
The desert chaps under my my feet
With dusty boots I ride in the heart
Pray to my Lord, while a wolf howls
Let me go back, back to my sweet
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name to bring me home again
I'll write your name through the fire
One more time
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name through the fire
I'll write your name to bring me home again
I'll write your name through the fire
The lyrics of Shocking Blue's song "I'll Write Your Name Through the Fire" alludes to a sense of longing and desire to return home. The singer of the song is seemingly lost and straying away from what he considers home. He struggles through the harsh, unknown terrains and a lonely heart but is certain he'll keep the memory of his loved ones with him by writing their name through the fire. The lyrics indicate a belief that this act will enable him to survive the difficulties he encounters and guide him back to the safety of his loved ones.
The opening lines express a poignant sense of purpose: to "write your name through the fire" as a way to find his way home. The singer goes on to describe his commitment to this task, saying that he will do it regardless of the difficulties and challenges he may face. This imagery of writing someone's name through the fire carries emotional weight and suggests an idea of preserving someone's memory even in trying times.
The second verse adds more detail to his journey as he sets off into the unknown, not knowing what lies ahead. The line "wounded by your love dart" suggests that he is not only physically alone but also hurting emotionally, perhaps because of a lost love. The chorus repeats the importance of him writing the name to bring him back home. The final verse of the song mentions a desert, and how the singer has been walking all day. This sense of being lost, lonely, and uncomfortable sets the tone for the final chorus, where he repeats the commitment to write the name through the fire so he could find his way back home.
