Prior to joining HAL Laboratory's sound team, he worked with Data East, where his works included the soundtrack for the arcade and SEGA Genesis/SEGA Mega Drive versions of the Super Famicom RPG Hercules' Glory IV.

@Lubi Pluas it’s…alright. But then story had it’s flaws, so did the gameplay and mechanics, and a few designs for each character as well. And where the setting takes place is also not so good as well. It tries too hard to copy the setting of the Metroid Fusion. Had Other M been a 2D or FPS, perhaps the gameplay would’ve made up for some things. But the characters also had flaws in personality and development, and the majority of them didn’t contribute to the story very well.

that's because you're assuming that all harmonic context must be expressed through volume, and thus missing the fact that the original "background melody" was ALWAYS the main melody. evidence: it's the one played by the wave table synth in the original FDS version. sticks out like a sore thumb there.

I love the thematic comparison between Fusion and Dread's item acquisition themes! Fusion's theme sounds very electric and has that "bwoooaaaa" effect near the end which seems to be a staple motif of the X parasites in the game. Dread still has some electronic synth in it to match and keeps that "bwoooaaa" that it had, yet it sounds more faithful to the traditional instruments. In a way you could say it reflects how Samus's suit in Dread is recovering visually from its organic Fusion suit look and is gaining back her more traditional look.

I think a big part of the differences in the theme is related to the setting and scope of the games as well; Fusion was an entirely manufactured and tightly packed environment, whereas Dread is a whole planet, a return to form after Fusion's deviance from 1/ZM, 2/SR, Super, and Prime. We see a bit of Fusion's electronic basis for the melody come back in Hunters where half the "planets" are tight, artificially-constructed space stations.

@GamingTopTen: "Development" includes more than just coding. Preproduction planning counts too, but if you want to be pedantic, it's still fair to say Nintendo always had every intention of developing a Metroid for N64 and just never got around to it.

This wasn't just secret internal "development" either, as even official Nintendo magazines advertised that Metroid 64 was in the works. So even if we ended up having to wait longer than expected between Super and Fusion, we at least knew Nintendo hadn't abandoned the franchise. Again, in sharp contrast to the complete blackout on any new info there was following Other M.

Also, the fact Fusion didn't launch alone, but simultaneously with Prime demonstrates how at the time Nintendo had a lot of confidence in the franchise. Further evidenced by Prime getting both two sequels and two spinoffs all in short order.

Metroid was riding high, before Other M came along and put it into hibernation.

I just love how the fusion theme starts off optimistic but became more ominous like its telling you you're not out of the woods yet.
