Hanky Panky
Shondells Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I saw her walking on down the line,
you know I saw her for the very first time,
a pretty little girl standing all alone,
hey, pretty baby, can I take you home
I never saw her, never ever saw her.
The Shondells' song "Hanky Panky" is an upbeat and catchy track that details the singer's first encounter with a girl who he is immediately smitten with. The opening lines describe how he first saw her walking down the line, and how he was struck by her beauty. He approaches her and asks her if he can take her home. The chorus then reveals that the girl in question does "the hanky panky", a euphemism for sexual activity.
The verses and chorus are simple and straightforward, but the song's true meaning is the subject of much debate. Some interpret it as a celebration of sexual liberation, while others believe it to be a cautionary tale about the perils of promiscuity. Regardless of the intended message, "Hanky Panky" remains a classic example of early rock 'n' roll, with its catchy melody and irreverent lyrics capturing the spirit of the era.
