Suzy
Shotgun Jimmie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to walk Suzy home from school
She painted my portrait in a red vest
Her parents always had lots to eat in the fridge
It was where I first saw Stop Making Sense

It all started out so innocently
I had a crush on this friend of Suzy's
So when we'd walk home she'd talk to me
About the different things that her friend found interesting
But as you might guess like at the end of the movie
I lost interest in her friend and I fell for Suzy
It was all so exciting, it was all so new to me

When I was in grade nine, when I was walking home with Suzy
When I was walking home with Suzy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Shotgun Jimmie's song Suzy is about a nostalgic recollection of the past. It talks about a boy who used to walk home with a girl named Suzy from school. They would have conversations about different things, and the boy initially had a crush on one of Suzy's friends. However, as time passed, he lost interest in her friend and found himself falling for Suzy instead.

The lyrics evoke a sense of innocence and excitement that comes when we first experience young love. This is highlighted when the song talks about the youth being in grade nine and how everything felt so new and exciting. The song also creates an atmosphere of familiarity by referencing things that the youth probably experienced during their childhood, such as watching the iconic music film Stop Making Sense and being fascinated by their friend’s fridge being stocked with plenty of food.

In conclusion, the song Suzy is a deeply nostalgic and sentimental tune that takes us back to the innocent and youthful days of our past. It perfectly captures the feeling of falling in love for the first time and how everything feels so new and exciting. The lyrics evoke memories of childhood, and the overall composition of the song does an excellent job at creating a sense of familiarity.

Love it! Am probably responsible for about 100 of these views. Love, too, how the video has not much to do (?) with the lyrics - which include the "Stop Making Sense" reference (righteous upon righteous layers happening here!). Just referred the song to 1. a singer-songwriter friend in Northern B.C. and a German-Polish friend here in Kenya. Saw Shotgun in my hometown, Hamilton, last spring - and wish him all the best.
