The band was formed in 1973 by the amalgamation of two groups, Choise and The Golden Hammers. This led to an eight member band, with the unusual feature of having two vocalists, two drummers, two bassists and two guitarists. Their first single, Hey Rock 'n' Roll (written by the band), was released in April 1974. It reached number two in the UK singles chart. Showaddywaddy then went on to have a further 22 UK hits from this point until late 1982. The first few singles were all written by the band and these generally reached the top-20. However they had most of their biggest hits with pop versions of old '50s US rock 'n' roll songs, catchy tunes backed up by their colourful image, dance routines and numerous television appearances. Some of their best known covers are Three Steps To Heaven, Heartbeat, Under The Moon Of Love, You Got What It Takes, Blue Moon (based on the Marcels' interpretation), and I Wonder Why.
In total they had ten Top Ten singles, a Number One, and spent 209 weeks in the UK singles chart. At the peak of their popularity, this tally included having seven successive Top Five entries. Their biggest selling single was the aforementioned "Under The Moon Of Love", which sold 985,000 copies and gave the group its only UK Number One.

It's no use sittin' and a-singin' the blues,
So be my guest you got nothing to lose,
Won't you let me take you on a sea cruise.
Oo-ee, oo-ee baby,
Oo-ee, oo-ee baby,
Oo-ee, oo-ee babe,
Won't ya let me take you on a sea cruise.
I feel like jumpin', baby won't you jump with me.
I don't like beggin', now I'm on my bended knee.
I gotta keep a rockin', get my hat on the rack,
I gotta boogie woogie like a knife in the back,
So be my guest you got nothing to lose,
Won't you let me take you on a sea cruise.
Oo-ee, oo-ee baby,
Oo-ee, oo-ee baby,
Oo-ee, oo-ee babe,
Won't you let me take you on a sea cruise.
I gotta keep on movin', baby I ain't lyin',
My heart's a-beating rhythm and it's right on time,
So be my guest you got nothing to lose,
Won't you take me on a sea cruise.
Oo-ee, oo-ee baby,
Oo-ee, oo-ee baby,
Oe-ee, oo-ee babe,
Won't you let me take you on a....

The lyrics of Showaddywaddy's song "Sea Cruise" tell the story of a man who is ready to hit the open sea with a special companion. He's got "old man rhythm in his shoes" and he's encouraging his love interest to come along with him for a wild ride on a sea cruise. The singer is confident in his invitation, telling his partner to "be his guest" and that they have nothing to lose.
The song has a sense of urgency and movement, with the singer emphasizing that he needs to keep rocking and moving, boogie woogie style. He feels like jumping and wants his partner to jump with him, but he's not one to beg. Instead, he's on his bended knee asking for a chance to take his love interest on a sea cruise. The repetition of "Oo-ee, oo-ee baby" throughout the song adds to the playful and upbeat atmosphere.
Overall, "Sea Cruise" is a fun and lively song about seizing the moment and going on an adventure with someone special.
