Shpongle's first track, "Vapour Rumours", was released on TIP Records' Infinite Excursions compilation in 1996. Their debut album, Are You Shpongled?, was released in 1998 on Twisted Records. On 9 September 2014, Posford confirmed beginning work on a sixth album, which was eventually announced as Codex VI and set for release in October 2017. On 3 October, even before the release of Codex VI, the duo announced via a Facebook video that they have begun working on their seventh studio album.
Posford is generally responsible for the synthesizers, studio work, and live instrumentation, while Raja Ram contributes broad musical concepts and flute arrangements. Raja Ram stated in an interview that "Shpongle" is an umbrella term for feeling positive and euphoric emotions. Shpongle's music is heavily influenced by psychedelic experiences and frequently makes use of sonic textures that approximate psychedelic states as well as vocal samples relating to consciousness expansion, hallucinations, and altered states of awareness. For example, the track "A New Way to Say 'Hooray'", contains a vocal sample of Terence McKenna describing the effects of DMT.

Shpongle Lyrics

The line "It was a monster hit" appears in the chorus of Shpongle's song of the same name. While the phrase "monster hit" often refers to a successful piece of media, the context of the song suggests a deeper meaning. Shpongle's music is known for its psychedelic and trance-like qualities, and "Monster Hit" is no exception. The song builds and ebbs in a way that mimics the waves of a journey. The line "It was a monster hit" is repeated throughout the song, growing in intensity with each repetition. It's as if the line itself is a mantra, guiding the listener on a path.
The lyrics seem to suggest that this "monster hit" is something transformative. The song's instrumentation shifts from heavy percussion to lighter, more ethereal sounds, and the vocals themselves are layered in a way that feels spiritual. As the song progresses, the line "It was a monster hit" becomes less of a statement of fact and more of an affirmation. It's as if the song is telling the listener, "This experience is going to be intense, but trust us, it's worth it."
Overall, the line "It was a monster hit" speaks to the idea of surrendering oneself to a journey, whether it be through music, spirituality, or any other means of exploration. It suggests that there may be discomfort and disorientation, but ultimately, the experience will be transformative and well worth it.
