Shpongle's first track, "Vapour Rumours", was released on TIP Records' Infinite Excursions compilation in 1996. Their debut album, Are You Shpongled?, was released in 1998 on Twisted Records. On 9 September 2014, Posford confirmed beginning work on a sixth album, which was eventually announced as Codex VI and set for release in October 2017. On 3 October, even before the release of Codex VI, the duo announced via a Facebook video that they have begun working on their seventh studio album.
Posford is generally responsible for the synthesizers, studio work, and live instrumentation, while Raja Ram contributes broad musical concepts and flute arrangements. Raja Ram stated in an interview that "Shpongle" is an umbrella term for feeling positive and euphoric emotions. Shpongle's music is heavily influenced by psychedelic experiences and frequently makes use of sonic textures that approximate psychedelic states as well as vocal samples relating to consciousness expansion, hallucinations, and altered states of awareness. For example, the track "A New Way to Say 'Hooray'", contains a vocal sample of Terence McKenna describing the effects of DMT.

First time I broke through on DMT was while listening to this song. I was outside and the sun had just started to the rise. I took my entire dose in one huge toke.
I remember exhaling right as they started talking at the beginning of the song and things went from 0-100 real quick..
Meeting DMT entities for the first time with this song blasting in the background is just an insane experience. I felt like I had channeled some hidden Mayan/Aztec energy and the entities that I met looked exactly like some Mayan or Aztec gods.
They took me on a raft through what I can only describe as some mystical river through temples and a jungle. At the time I had an extremely unhealthy diet, weighed 400lbs, smoked cigarettes, and did a shit load of drugs. The entities told me to take care of my heart and body. Almost every DMT breakthrough I had was the entities telling me to love myself and it’s all that matters. Sounds cliché, but given the setting, it was very profound.
4 years later I’m sober from all drugs, besides occasional cannabis use and kratom for pain. I quit smoking cigs, and lost over 200lbs. If it weren’t for my psychedelic experiences, idk if I would have had the outside perspective of my unhealthy self that motivated the change of lifestyle.

I still can't believe how good this intro is, I remember that we listened to this like 5 hours into the trip, and 0:31 literally felt like ENTERING INTO THE BABY CRY, and then being completely hypnotized by the reverbed percussive and the whole rest of the song. Unforgettable, one of the best psychedelic songs ever, every part is just so well done and layered.
