Mary Jane
Shwayze Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Her name was Mary Jane
She sang, like Etta James
She came and went to easily
And it's strange, how times are changed
I seen Mary yesterday, and she
Don't look the same to me

Baby what's the word?
I ain't trying to kill your mockingbird
I got scared and I started walking backwards
And after I got home alone
I couldn't stop drunk dialing your cellular phone
And when you don't pick up, your hang up hurts
I know I got caught with my hand up her skirt
I'm into sandals with the candle light romance
I go to itunes, to download your slow jams
Typhoon, with the thunder clap
I fell in love with the girl in my summer class
She sat, right next to me
And she made me tell the truth like ecstasy
So, whoa, I gotta slow myself on down
I've been in love before

Her name was Mary Jane
She sang, like Etta James
She came and went to easily
And it's strange, how times are changed
I seen Mary yesterday, and she
Don't look the same to me

Baby we can be my mellow lil lady
Marijuana sunshine soul made crazy
Why go back and forth like a maybe?
You and I can flow and say I love sailing
Light brown Elleby on Chip and Dale
Skin say I'm fat but I'm skinny as a rail
Pet snail, I got a freak on her knees
I need a little more made of the American Dream
I want her fired up, yea baby don't try to tie me up
I'm just not the type of guy that'd wanna lie to ya
And if you wanna try to fall in love
It's going to take a little time
And I won't budge for a minute now
You've got to slow yourself on down
I've been in love before

Her name was Mary Jane
She sang, like Etta James
She came and went to easily
And it's strange, how times are changed
I seen Mary yesterday, and she
Don't look the same to me

Well she arrived on an astroplane
6:45 on a Saturday
Just in time for the masquerade
Just in time for the masquerade
Well she arrived in a limousine
7:45 on a Sunday
Just in time to see
Me making love to her friend Marie
I said: Baby this ain't what you think
Like I'm supposed to say that 'cause I've seen it on t.v.
Then she ran out into the street
Why this has happened to me?
No, got to slow myself on down
I know where this is going now
I've been in love before

Her name was Mary Jane
She sang, like Etta James
She came and went to easily
And it's strange, how times are changed

I seen Mary yesterday, and she
Don't look the same to me

Overall Meaning

The song "Mary Jane" by Shwayze tells a story of a man and his connection to Mary Jane, likely referring to marijuana, but also personified as a woman. The first verse describes Mary Jane as a singer, with a voice compared to Etta James, who appears and disappears easily, with the times having changed as the singer sees Mary yesterday but notices that she doesn't look the same to him. The second verse talks about the singer's feelings towards a girl and how he's scared to commit, even though he's falling in love. He also confesses to being unfaithful and cheating on his partner. The chorus repeats the description of Mary Jane and how she doesn't look the same to him anymore.

In the third verse, the singer tries to convince his partner to relax and enjoy life with him, without any pressure. He references some pop culture references, like Chip and Dale, and mentions something about his weight, saying he's "skinny as a rail." He then talks about wanting to be honest with his partner and about the necessity of taking things slow, as he's been in love before. Finally, the fourth verse tells a story of infidelity, where the singer's partner walks in on him with her friend Marie. He tries to explain himself, but she runs out into the street, distressed about what she's seen.

Overall, the song "Mary Jane" speaks about love, fear, and change over time, using the metaphor of Mary Jane, who appears and disappears easily in the singer's life. The song also touches on themes of unfaithfulness, honesty, and commitment, all wrapped up in a catchy, acoustic melody.

Same for me. Sure do miss it.

Roly Meza

I graduated ‘10 and basically spent the entire summer at the island. Got to see him twice and this takes me back to hanging with my high school buds. Now I’m a HS teacher...I wish I had a Polaroid then

Mandapants

it's so funny I see so many people in the comments of all the songs from this album say this was their graduation summer music, but they all graduated different years lol. it was my summer after graduation music but in 2008 haha, and we were still bumping it the next summer when the other half of my friend group graduated (and for years to come)

Barry Lodin

these lyrics are wrong but the song is AMAZING!

Realove

I have no idea how accurate these lyrics are btw.

Seeing what the title of the name was , I thought it would be a decent song, being that I myself love Mary Jane. Like all their songs they're singing about hopeless teenage love. Lyrics are decent compared to their other work which consent of weak lyrics and predictable rhymes. Though this song does have a very predicable rhyme scheme.

Simon Gingras-Palardy

Shwayze sounds like chillin songs
