Under Fire
Shy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Running every day, trying to fade away
Into the background to cover my trail
I drift alone, with a heart of stone
Running forever, caught in a crossfire

Living for the chase, watching every face
A hunt to renegade a stranger in town
Standing in the shade, every night I pray
Pray for the future, but never look back

Under fire, I need a place to hide
Under fire, or I'm gonna lose my mind
Under fire, I'm way beyond the law
Under fire, I can't be a free man no more

Standing in the rain, I never show the pain
Got no direction or destination
Gotta hold on tight, 'cause here comes the night
Running forever, caught in a crossfire

Under fire, I need a place to hide
Under fire, or I'm gonna lose my mind
Under fire, I'm way beyond the law
Under fire, I can't be a free man no more

Under fire, I need a place to hide
Under fire, or I'm gonna lose my mind
Under fire, I'm way beyond the law
Under fire, I can't be a free man no more

Under fire, I need a place to hide
Under fire, or I'm gonna lose my mind

Under fire, I'm way beyond the law
Under fire, I can't be a free man no more

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Shy's "Under Fire" express the feeling of being trapped and constantly on the run to avoid being caught. The singer is living a life on the fringes of society and is in constant fear of being discovered. He tries to blend into the background and cover his tracks to avoid being found, but he can never truly escape the crossfire.

The first verse speaks about the singer's attempts to run away from his past and his current situation, always trying to fade away into the background. He feels alone, with no one to turn to, and is caught in the crossfire of his own life. The second verse talks about his constant need to be on the chase, always looking over his shoulder, and how he lives for the thrill of being a renegade. He prays for the future, but never looks back, as he knows that the past will catch up with him.

The chorus repeats the idea of being "under fire" and needing a place to hide. The singer is beyond the law, and his only motivations are survival and keeping his freedom. The repetition reinforces the idea that the singer is trapped in his situation and that he needs help to escape.

Overall, "Under Fire" is a song about the struggle of trying to survive while constantly on the run from something. The lyrics are a metaphor for the feeling of being trapped in a situation and never being able to escape.

@MemphoWrasslin1 As Steve's wife, I am saddened to read such a heartless comment. Real souls, genuine people are a gift to this World....sadly, you are not one of them.

This was a free Flexi disc on Kerrang around 1985. A good group that didn't quite make it big. A lot to do with the fact that the mid 80's there was a lot of competition with groups like Saxon, Maiden, Metallica, MSG, Dio and Ozzy at their absolute peak.

Me too, better than the usual flexi-discs they used to give away. This one was vinyl with a sleeve. My first ever Kerrang. Great solo, no over use of effects, sounds like it's coming right out fo the amp - brilliant.
