In 2000, Sia signed to Sony Music's sub-label Dance Pool and released her second studio album, Healing Is Difficult, the following year. Displeased with the promotion of the record, she signed to Go! Beat and released her third studio album, Colour the Small One, in 2004. The project struggled to connect with a mainstream audience, and so Sia relocated to New York City in 2005 and began touring across the United States. She released her fourth and fifth studio releases, Some People Have Real Problems and We Are Born, in 2008 and 2010, respectively. She then took a hiatus from performing, during which she focused on songwriting for other artists. Her catalogue includes the successful collaborations "Titanium" (with David Guetta), "Diamonds" (with Rihanna) and "Wild Ones" (with Flo Rida).
In 2014, Sia released her sixth studio album 1000 Forms of Fear, which debuted at No 1 in the U.S. Billboard 200 and generated the top-ten breakthrough single "Chandelier" and a trilogy of music videos starring child dancer Maddie Ziegler. In 2016, she released her seventh studio album This Is Acting, which spawned her first Hot 100 number one single, "Cheap Thrills". The same year, Sia gave her Nostalgic for the Present Tour, which incorporated performance art elements. Sia has received an array of accolades, including ARIA Awards and an MTV Video Music Award.

I didn't know who to trust, oh
So I designed a shell
Kept me from Heaven and Hell, oh
And I had hit a low
Was all I let myself know, yeah
Yeah I had locked my heart
I was imprisoned by dark (I was imprisoned by dark)
You found me dressed in black
Hiding way up at the back
Life had broken my heart into pieces
You took my hand in yours
You started breaking down my walls
And you covered my heart in kisses
I thought life passed me by
Missed my tears, ignored my cries
Life had broken my heart, my spirit
And then you crossed my path
You quelled my fears, you made me laugh
Then you covered my heart in kisses
I was down for the count
Yes I was down, I was out, oh ooh
And I had lost it all
Yes I was scared, I was torn oh
And I took to the night
I'd given in to the fight oh ooh
And I slipped further down
I felt like I had drowned
You found me dressed in black
Hiding way up at the back
Life had broken my heart into pieces
You took my hand in yours
You started breaking down my walls
And you covered my heart in kisses
I thought life passed me by
Missed my tears, ignored my cries
Life had broken my heart, my spirit
And then you crossed my path
You quelled my fears, you made me laugh
Then you covered my heart in kisses
I was hopeless and broken, you opened the door for me
Yeah I was hiding and you let the light in and now I see
That you do for the wounded, what they couldn't seem to, you set them free
Like a butterfly kissing a child with an eye for the minor key yeah
You found me dressed in black
Hiding way up at the back
Life had broken my heart into pieces
You took my hand in yours
You started breaking down my walls
And you covered my heart in kisses
I thought life passed me by
Missed my tears, ignored my cries
Life had broken my heart, my spirit
And then you crossed my path
You quelled my fears, you made me laugh
Then you covered my heart in kisses
Covered my heart in kisses
The lyrics of Sia's song Dressed in Black depict the journey of a person who has gone through some tough times and had given up on everything. The person had hit a low and had locked their heart, imprisoning themselves in darkness. However, someone came along and found them dressed in black, hiding at the back, and gave them hope, breaking down their walls one kiss at a time. The person describes how life had broken their heart into pieces, with tears and ignored cries, but this person who crossed their path brought light into their life and set them free.
The song's meaning is powerful, and it tells a tale of how we can all find hope when someone is there to help us. It shows that, though life can be challenging at times, we should keep going because light is always at the end of the tunnel. Furthermore, the use of darkness and light in the lyrics portrays how the two can coexist and how light can break through the darkness to bring hope.
The chorus "You covered my heart in kisses" emphasizes that, through love and companionship, one can heal and find comfort. The song's lyrics remind us that, though life can feel hopeless and dark, we should open our hearts to others because they may be the light we need to get back up.
