Oh Father
Sia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's funny that way
You can get used to the tears and the pain
What a child will believe
You never loved me

You can't hurt me now
I got away from you, I never thought I would
You can't make me cry
You had the power
I never felt so good about myself

Seems like yesterday
I lay down next to your boots and I prayed
For your anger to end
Oh Father I have sinned

You can't hurt me now
I got away from you, I never thought I would
You can't make me cry
You had the power
I never felt so good about myself

Oh Father you never wanted to live that way
You never wanted to hurt me
Why am I running away

Oh Father you never wanted to live that way
You never wanted to hurt me
Why am I running away

Oh Father you never wanted to live that way
You never wanted to hurt me
Why am I running away

Maybe someday
When I look back I'll be able to say
You didn't mean to be cruel
Somebody hurt you too

You can't hurt me now
I got away from you, I never thought I would
You can't make me cry
You had the power
I never felt so good about myself

You can't hurt me now
I got away from you, I never thought I would
You can't hurt me now
I got away from you, I never thought I would
And you can't make me cry
You had the power
I never felt so good
You can't hurt me now
I got away from you, I never thought I would
You can't make me cry

You had the power
I never felt so good about myself

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sia’s “Oh Father” tell a story of a child who suffered at the hands of their father’s cruelty and abuse, but has since found the strength to break away from the pain and live a better life. The first stanza describes how a child can get used to the pain and tears that come with abuse, as they often don’t know any other way to live. The lines “what a child will believe, you never loved me” suggest that the child has come to believe they are unlovable or undeserving of affection due to their father’s mistreatment.

In the second stanza, the persona addresses their father directly, asking why they had to suffer and why they are now running away from him. The lines “oh father I have sinned” suggest that the child may have blamed themselves for their father’s behavior or believed that they caused the abuse. The chorus repeats the powerful message that the child is now free from their father’s influence and has found a newfound confidence in themselves.

The third stanza is a poignant reflection on the complex nature of abuse and how it can be cyclical. The persona wonders if the father too was a victim of abuse, and that his actions were perhaps a result of that trauma. The final chorus brings the song to a close with a repetition of the central themes of freedom, strength and resilience.

on Unstoppable

All smiles, I know what it takes to fool this town
I'll do it 'til the sun goes down and all through the nighttime
Oh yeah, oh yeah, I'll tell you what you wanna hear
Keep my sunglasses on while I shed a tear
It's never the right time, yeah, yeah

I put my armor on, show you how strong I am
I put my armor on, I'll show you that I am

I'm unstoppable
I'm a Porsche with no brakes
I'm invincible
And, I win every single game
I'm so powerful
I don't need batteries to play
I'm so confident, yeah, I'm unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, yeah, I'm unstoppable today

Break down, only alone I will cry out loud
You'll never see what's hiding out
Hiding out deep down, yeah, yeah
I know, I've heard that to let your feelings show
Is the only way to make friendships grow
But I'm too afraid now, yeah, yeah

I put my armor on, show you how strong I am
I put my armor on, I'll show you that I am

I'm unstoppable
I'm a Porsche with no brakes
I'm invincible
And, I win every single game
I'm so powerful
I don't need batteries to play
I'm so confident, yeah, I'm unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, yeah, I'm unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, yeah, I'm unstoppable today

I put my armor on, show you how strong I am
I put my armor on, I'll show you that I am

I'm unstoppable
I'm a Porsche with no brakes
I'm invincible
Yeah, I win every single game
I'm so powerful
I don't need batteries to play
I'm so confident, yeah, I'm unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, yeah, I'm unstoppable today

Unstoppable today, unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, yeah, I'm unstoppable today
