Under the Milky Way
Sia Lyrics

Sound of their breath fades with the light
I think about the loveless fascination
Under the milky way tonight
Lower the curtain down in Memphis
Lower the curtain down all right
I got no time for private consultation
I wish I knew what you were looking for
I might have known what you would find
And it's something quite peculiar
Something that shimmering and white
Leads you here despite your destination
Under the milky way tonight
Under the milky way tonight
I wish I knew what you were looking for
I might have known what you would find
I wish I knew what you were looking for
I might have known what you would find
Under the milky way tonight
Under the milky way tonight
I wish I knew what you were looking for
I might have known what you would find
I wish I knew what you were looking for
I might have known what you would find
(Milky way tonight)
Under the milky way tonight
Under the milky way tonight
Under the milky way tonight
Under the milky way tonight
The opening lines of Sia's "Under the Milky Way" suggest a feeling of emptiness, possibly of being alone. The sound of someone's breath can be heard, but it fades away with the light. The singer then reflects on a "loveless fascination" that is somehow connected to the Milky Way. This seems to suggest a longing for something, perhaps a romantic relationship or some kind of spiritual fulfillment.
The second verse mentions Memphis, and suggests that the curtains are being lowered, either literally or metaphorically. There's no time for "private consultation," and the singer's attention returns to the Milky Way, which is described as "something quite peculiar" and "shimmering and white." The last two lines of the verse imply that the Milky Way is leading the singer somewhere, even if that wasn't their intended destination.
The chorus repeats the singer's lament that they don't know what someone else is looking for, or what they might find. The refrain "under the Milky Way tonight" suggests that whatever the singer is searching for is connected to the night sky. There's a sense of mystery and wonder throughout the song, as if the answers to life's questions might be found by looking up at the stars.

Huge, huge fan of The Church, and other ethereal Post-Punk bands like The Chameleons, Drum Machine & The Bunnymen, Sad Loves & Giants, etc. But I have to say Sia really killed it on this rendition. It's very tasteful, and in the spirit of the original.
