Side Brok were pioneers in terms of normalizing norwegian language in rap after many years where english was the norm and norwegian was considered ill-fitting for anything other than novelty-rap. They helped achieve this alongside contemporaries such as Tungtvann and Dirty Oppland by embracing regional quirks in terms of culture and dialect -- thus shifting the focus of their craft from the US to the norwegian countryside. Side Brok originate from the same village as the inventor of nynorsk, Ivar Aasen. Nynorsk is one of the two branches of written norwegian language, deviced as an antidote to the erosion of the original norwegian during the period when Norway was under danish rule. The parallel with Side Brok's influence on the norwegian hip hop scene is hard to come around.
The band was awarded "Årets Urørt" (Music award given to Norway's best up-and-coming artists) in 2004 and have released three full length albums. The band name, Side Brok, is norwegian dialect for "sagging pants". The members of Side Brok are Sjef R and his alter ego Thorstein Hyl III, Skatebård, Sirkelsag, Tore B, Odd G and Tunk.

skjemde
Side Brok Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Om det e, nynorsk eller gammale sandskrift
Prask og pramfri skjønskrift eller kjønnsdrift
Om du e fanga i limbo
Manga libido
Heldig i kjærleik eller dritgod
I bringo snakka lingo som en bimbo
Om musikken e stoppa
Og lyset er slått a'
The lyrics of Side Brok's song "skjemde" convey a message of acceptance and encouragement for individuals to embrace their uniqueness and not be ashamed of it. The repeated phrase "Du he'kje noke å vere skjemde ta" (You have nothing to be ashamed of) reinforces this idea throughout the song. The lyrics touch on various aspects of one's personal identity, such as language, sexual orientation, relationship status, and career, to name a few.
The first few lines of the song mention the various writing styles and forms, including nynorsk and gammale sandskrift, highlighting how the song is not just for a particular group of people but for everyone. The words "prask og pramfri" and "kjønnsdrift" suggest that being vocal about one's sexual desires is also something to be proud of. The lyrics also acknowledge that one can be caught in a state of uncertainty, both in terms of their sexuality and relationships, but that ultimately, it should not lead to shame.
The song further touches on how one's profession or career may be viewed by society, be it as glamorous or underwhelming, but that it is essential to be proud of what one does. The words "avdanka sterne" refer to former stars or celebrities that may have been forgotten over time, highlighting the fleeting nature of fame. The song also enforces the idea that being accepted by others is not the key to finding happiness, as individuals should be content with who they are rather than trying to be accepted and liked by society.
Overall, Side Brok's "skjemde" is a powerful message of self-love and acceptance, encouraging individuals to embrace their uniqueness without fear or shame.
