Their members included Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, before he left to join the Afro-Cuban All Stars and Jesus Alemany, who formed Cubanisimo. The band is still together.

The group Sierra Maestra, headed up by Juan d'Marcos Gonzales, is an outstanding nine-piece son band from Havana. They are one of the finest and most popular musical ensembles performing in the Spanish Caribbean today. They were the first group, and remain the best, to play in the old-style son line-up: tres, guitar, trumpet, bongo, güiro and vocals--as during the great days of the 1920s and '30s. They have been the pioneers in reviving this style for new generations and re-introducing it into the Cuban mainstream. They named themselves after the mountain range in the eastern part of Cuba as a tribute to the birthplace of son.

Sierra Maestra first performed in 1976 at the University of Havana where the group members all studied. Their aim, then as now, was to revive and re-explore this popular Cuban music style of the 1920s which had become forgotten. The original line-up mentioned above was slightly augmented with extra percussion (congas and maracas) and the replacement of the old marimbula with electric bass. Some of the guaracha rhythms were speeded up to allow for the move away from the slow close pair dancing of the '20s. This revival of son with a modern stamp was a sensation for the new generation of Cubans, and Sierra Maestra quickly became popular through playing the annual festivals at the universities around the island of Cuba. They won the first prize in each of their first 3 years - '76, '77 and '78. They were also appearing regularly on national TV.

In 1978, they were asked to represent Cuba at the "Festival Mundial de la Juventud y los Estudiantes" in Havana. In 1979, they took 4th place at the televised "Carifesta" Caribbean competition, also in Havana. In 1981 their first record, "Sierra Maestra llegó con el guanajo relleno", received a silver disc, a composite award for high sales, general popularity and critical reception. They also won individual prizes for the best recording, most popular song and the
highest record sales. 1981 was also the year of their first foreign tour -- to Nicaragua.

They recorded their second LP, "Y Son Asi", in 1982 and won the Girasol prize for being the most popular group of the year. They toured Angola and Nicaragua that year. In 1983 they won the "Benny More" dance music prize at the festival of the same name and took part in the IV Song Festival held in Helsinki. They then travelled to Sweden and France and to the International Film Festival in Spain (where they have often played over the years). Also in 1983, they recorded the soundtrack to the Cuban TV series "Las Impuras"; (more recently their song "A Los Rumberos de Belen" was used by Robert Redford for his film "The Milagro Beanfield War"). Since then Sierra Maestra have maintained a full international touring and recording career, around Europe, Africa and Asia.

In 1994 during their European tour, they recorded "Dundunbanza" for World Circuit Records in London, an extremely stylish cocktail of Arsenio Rodriguez tunes and other favourites. Sierra Maestra now have worldwide distribution for their music. One of Cuba's great musical secrets is now out!

Avi Loeb did change, and will continue to change his tune on any subject matter where reality has begun indicating to us that we may not know everything about her nature that we expected we did. Unidentified objects in the sky are no exception, various aerial phenomena are no exception, our physical models of the universe at the largest, smallest, and most extreme scales aren't an exception, he is simply leading by example.

And y'know what it takes to accomplish that? Just the same sense of curiosity that we all entered the world with, but that some folks in the scientific community (and of course among the rest of humanity as well), for reasons that only they each as individuals might be able to tell us, have found themselves missing (I'm not suggesting that this is something most of them are even consciously aware of, just to be clear). Curiosity, and honesty.

Part of what I love and admire so much about Dr. Loeb is his understanding that science is not politics. In politics, admitting when you are wrong, telling the public honestly and transparently that you've made a mistake, or God forbid admitting that your opponent made a more convincing argument than you did, that actually ended up CHANGING your mind, are all acts made out by party leadership, the [usually] mainstream political media, etc. to be politically suicidal, electorally DISASTROUS, and in some instances even moral FAILINGS lmao.
I personally think it's just a horrendously stupid self-fulfilling prophecy based on completely bogus common wisdom that people keep buying into, but in any case, science ISN'T politics. The whole point is to find ways to experimentally prove yourself wrong, so that afterwards, we can come out the other side having a more complete understanding of the world and universe around BASED ON TRUTH.

So Avi will continue to dauntlessly listen to reality, seeking the truth about it without fear or prejudice, no matter where that ends up taking us—and his example, and his unbelievable perseverance, will leave humanity better off for it.

Because due to time dilation, time will essentially be paused at the very central point of a black hole, right?
So then no matter, even during the entire lifetime of the universe, would have had enough "time" to fall into the absolute center.
It would all slow down the closer it gets, until it collides and accumulates with a "shockwave wall", a wall of increasing density all around the singularity, like an egg shell that has maximum density on the inside (but still hollow beyond the shell towards the center), and slowly less density on the outside.

Because gravity itself doesnt "do anything" when time is paused, right?
Because for gravity to have an effect, matter must be allowed to accelerate and move.
If time is paused, nothing can move, thus the gravity becomes irrelevant.
At the absolute center.

I dont see how there's any way that the absolute central singularity of a black hole can have any matter at all, since time has paused, the matter cant "fall in".
So it must be a gradient of dense matter in a shell around the absolute singularity.
The most dense matter in the universe, surrounding the most empty void in the universe, where not even quantum fluctuations can spawn new particles, because time runs too slowly for even that to occur..

He's one of the few scientists confident enough to take the subject seriously in public-facing discussions without also making unsupported claims and jumping to ridiculous conclusions. If I'm not mistaken he was skeptical about aliens not that long ago and has publicly changed his opinion based on new evidence. That's the kind of scientist I appreciate and will take seriously. While others still hold to their skepticism so as to not face ridicule, this man openly voices his change of perspective and ignores the ridicule because he takes new evidence seriously. He isn't holding back his beliefs for fear of damaging his career, he is a true scientist.

If you were to get pulled towards a black hole, wouldn't the observable event horizon always stay ahead of you? As you get closer, you will be in the 'orbit' of the light that you were previously not able to see, but the light between you would still be pulled towards the singularity and you'd be unable to see it. You'd continue to see more and more of what was previously un-observable until you were pulled apart by tidal forces - meanwhile to an external observer you would be frozen in time right at their version of the event horizon.

Here's an interesting question, should the drake equation be revised with a variable for the proximity of those starts in a galaxy that are within a "not so safe distance" to their center/black hole? So, is there are galactic goldilocks zone then and this would probably "reduce" the total number of possible habitable/habited planets then?

Yes, I include this in estimate of 10-10,000 planets in Milky way with animate life. Perhaps 100 times as many have some non animate life forms.

There is also a limited time window in existence of a planet when life can exist.

Intelligent forms of life are likely to be very rare, there are just too many hurdles and choke points. Earth maybe only one in Milky Way, but certainly no more than 100 likely to exist.

34:50 wait, wouldnt it then be theoretically possible, that an entire solar system with planets, could "survive" inside the event horizon of a black hole? Since time slows down, it would eventually take that star / planet billions of years to "reach" the center (or collide with the mass deep inside).
Given that radiation and stuff doesnt sterilize everything, obviously.

I think the difference in gravity between the side facing the black hole and side facing away would be too much and start ripping matter apart. It's where the "spaghettification" term comes from. The gravity is so strong that even the distance between your head and feet is enough to stretch you out, so I'd imagine it would act more so on stars and systems. It's an interesting thought though.

What if the black hole is like flying through the center of a hurricane where the air pressure inside the hole is calm and windless. In the vacuum of space there is no air. Possibly magnetic turbulence revoving around a point in space at it's center absent of matter, motion and magnetic resinance. An inescapeable center like the big blue spot on Neptune, or the big red spot on Jupiter, rather than a funnel?

That's what I always wonder. All that matter inside a blackhole is infinitely dense to the point all the electrons, neutrons & protons etc are PHYSICALLY touching each other like a bag of barbles. I think the reason aliens (if they are visiting us) would want to visit us is not for our resources or for scientific data because they can do that from their home by sending probes or sophisticated holographic projections that take omnidirectional video, audio, temperature recordings and meteorological measurements and send that info back to them to study. The reason they would want to come here in person would be for nostalgic reasons because they grew up here and when life got too bad millions of years ago they left the planet in search for a new planet to live and come back every so often to see how the new tenants are doing with their old home. And if they see we might destroy it or make life more difficult to live then they might stop us various ways without resulting to violence unless absolutely necessary, or else they would've done it by now imo.

Regarding the possibility of a unified theory of quantum mechanics and gravity I think we need to put much more focus on the initial postulates of the two theories. In particular based on the work extending general relativity into inhomogeneous and anisotropic conditions it appears that there are some fascinating properties which suggest serious problems related to logical internal consistency with the general assumption called the cosmological principle which says that at some sufficiently large scale. In particular work by Matthew Kleban and Leonardo Senatore (Matthew Kleban and Leonardo Senatore JCAP10(2016)022) shows that for any nontrivial flat or open cosmology there can not exist any maximum spatial volume at any timeslice of spacetime. The natural formulation of this was notably suspiciously similar to the definition of entropy within information theory when accounting for the total number of possible configurations being countably finite which caught my attention.

Having dived deeper into the math it becomes clear that the implication is that there can not exist any nontrivial solutions which obey the Friedmann Lemaitre Robertson Walker metric because all possible solutions will invariably diverge from this idealized solution if the system isn't perfectly uniform and isotropic everywhere at all possible scales. Furthermore I believe I have figured out what this entropy is the measure of specifically it represents the entropy of paths which information can have causally propagated when accounting for that within general relativity all paths are unique i.e. the theory is path dependent and as a system of partial differential equations the Einstein field equations force all possible solutions to be unique for all possible initial conditions meaning that the metric at all points of spacetime is always uniquely determined thus terms within the metric tensor can never cancel out or be symmetric at least within the constraints of any arbitrary initial conditions for a nontrivial flat or open universe.

In principal accounting for path dependence we can utilize stokes theorem to convert from the volume formalism for logical consistency to hold and use that to derive the formalism of black hole thermodynamics specifically the link between surface area and entropy without the need to invoke quantum mechanics directly which has important implications linking general relativity with quantum mechanics specifically it suggests that information becomes encoded within the field of paths through spacetime which make up the full metric tensor. This means that the metric tensor field aka gravity carries away information in the form of irreducible asymmetries within the metric and furthermore this is nonlocally constrained by the total information encoded within the Universe's initial conditions meaning any attempts to simplify the metric within general relativity must necessarily violate the conservation of information.

In this light the information paradox and general incompatibility of solutions of general relativity with quantum mechanics become trivial consequences of the initial postulates of GR violating one of the foundational principals of quantum mechanics. One very real consequence of this is that their should be small but nonzero irregularities within the gravitational field of the black hole or anything else though at this point what those would look like is hard to say given that they will be a consequence of path dependent information propagation though spacetime. Unfortunately Gödel's incompleteness theorems cause problems as we are observers embedded within our universe.

This is a really cool thought. The more I think on it the cooler it gets actually. My only argument would be that it's the accumulation of all that mass that causes the extreme time dilation in the first place so there should be mass there? If the mass had already gathered before time came to a stand still? Im not sure, it is a very cool thought though. It will keep me up thinking about it for sure.

True. But we would eventually learn how to. My theory if any one believes the Roswell incident, it took scientist til the 80s to understand the captured technology which was 40 years in the making when it came to material science, it's not til now we're somewhat understanding how the engines work on the UFOs. We're closing the gap between their tech & ours with their SIMPLE disposable recon craft, who knows what other higher tier tech they may have which would take us a few centuries to figure out.
