Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You sigh low tonight
You're so alone
You're so
You sigh low tonight
You're so alone
You're so
You're so low
You're so alone
You're so
You sigh low
You sigh low
You're so
(you're so)

you sigh low tonight
You're so alone
You're so
You sigh low tonight
You're so alone
You're so
You're so low
You're so alone
You're so
You sigh low

You sigh low
You're so

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sigur Rós's song "Sigur 1" appear to be quite repetitive and straightforward, but there's more to them than meets the eye. The song is entirely in a made-up language referred to as Vonlenska, also known as Hopelandic, which allows the listener to focus on the emotions conveyed through the music rather than the meaning of the words. The language sounds like a combination of Icelandic and gibberish and was created by the band's lead singer Jónsi Birgisson.

As for the lyrics themselves, they seem to be conveying a sense of loneliness and isolation, with the repeated line "you sigh low tonight, you're so alone" evoking a feeling of sadness and despair. The line "you're so low" could be interpreted as a reference to the low emotional state of the subject of the song. The repetition of these lines throughout the song emphasizes this feeling of aloneness and hopelessness.

Overall, "Sigur 1" is a hauntingly beautiful song that relies heavily on the emotion conveyed through the music rather than the meaning behind the lyrics. It's a prime example of how music can communicate complex emotions without the need for language.

Everyone hears this song differently, it's beautiful. I want this played at my funeral... I guess it would be my way of letting everyone attending hear what they need to hear at that moment. I hope they like it :)

About ten years ago we were laying in bed with my girl who I had been with for my whole youth. I put this album on and during this first song she suddenly burst into tears and started sobbing hysterically. I wondered what's wrong and she said that this made her think about how some day her parents will die, we will die, all the people we'll ever know will die and won't be here anymore and said how much she loves me. Even when we are separated now and are not in each others lives anymore, I will never ever forget that moment. It reminds me how beautiful and effective music can be, probably the most important thing in my whole life, but more importantly how nothing lasts forever and we should enjoy all the time we have left
