Darkstrand
Silent Planet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Creation creates a void. My hand held to the glare of this burnt impasse yours, necessarily on the other side of some sickly metaxis. You're caught in stasis, matched with mine. Quantify time with meter and rhyme to calculate a way to prove that you are alive. Isolated, trapped between, a picture of you now stained on the street. Oh mother, teach me how to die.In your shadow I saw to a distant future your life was only a nominal fee. Signing the sound of silence, signaling the end. They took your life, mother, as a pretense to pretend. The hand that feeds us sat you down. Covered my eyes, thrusted the styli, retraced the timeline to call it suicide. Will you wait for me?Death was the chorus - our lives frames in refrain. Softly we sing notes better sung by our dead. I'd rather sleep and see you soon than die alone in the waste of this nuclear catastrophe. We were made to create, you spoke us out of nothing. Out of the chaos we caused - naked came, shadows we leave.Salt of the Earth: Preserve their songs. Light of World: Burn out the shadows. Infinite echoes of stifled screams - the abyss you created will ever stare back into me.Will you wait for me?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Silent Planet's song "Darkstrand" delve into themes of creation, isolation, loss, and the contemplation of death. The opening line, "Creation creates a void," suggests that the act of creating something new often leaves behind a sense of emptiness. The singer's hand held to the glare of a burnt impasse symbolizes a barrier or conflict that separates them from another person, referred to as "you" in the song. This resulting isolation is further emphasized by the line, "You're caught in stasis, matched with mine," implying that both the singer and the other person are trapped in a stagnant state.

The lyrics also touch on the search for meaning and validation in life, as the singer seeks to "prove that you are alive." There is a mention of a picture stained on the street, perhaps representing a memory or a representation of the past. The line, "Oh mother, teach me how to die," reflects a longing for guidance and understanding in the face of mortality.

The song continues to explore the theme of death, with the chorus emphasizing death as the prominent motif in life. The lyrics suggest a desire for connection even in the face of impending doom, as the singer would rather "sleep and see you soon than die alone." The mention of a "nuclear catastrophe" adds a sense of urgency and imminent danger to the narrative.

In the final verses, the lyrics allude to the concept of creation and the responsibility that comes with it. The singer acknowledges that humans were made to create but also recognize the chaos they may cause. The reference to "Salt of the Earth" and "Light of the World" implies that these creations should be preserved and used to bring light to the shadows. Ultimately, the lyrics convey a sense of reflection, loss, and the ongoing struggle to find purpose and connection in a world tainted by destruction.

Line by Line Meaning

Creation creates a void.
The act of creating something can leave behind an emptiness or lack within oneself.

My hand held to the glare of this burnt impasse yours, necessarily on the other side of some sickly metaxis.
My hand is reaching towards the intense brightness of this hopeless dead end, while yours is inevitably on the opposite side of a twisted and unpleasant reality.

You're caught in stasis, matched with mine.
You are stuck in a state of motionlessness, just like me.

Quantify time with meter and rhyme to calculate a way to prove that you are alive.
I try to measure and understand time through rhythmic patterns and poetic verses, in hopes of finding a method to validate your existence.

Isolated, trapped between, a picture of you now stained on the street.
Feeling alone and confined, your image now tainted and permanently marked on the pavement.

Oh mother, teach me how to die.
Oh mother, guide me in understanding the concept and process of death.

In your shadow I saw to a distant future your life was only a nominal fee.
Being influenced by your presence, I glimpsed a far-off future where your life held little significance or value.

Signing the sound of silence, signaling the end.
By acknowledging the absence of sound, we symbolize the conclusion and culmination of an event.

They took your life, mother, as a pretense to pretend.
They unjustly ended your life, mother, under the false pretense of pretending or deceiving.

The hand that feeds us sat you down. Covered my eyes, thrusted the styli, retraced the timeline to call it suicide.
The entity that provides for us brought you to an end. I closed my eyes, forcefully inserted the writing instruments, and rewrote the sequence of events, labeling it as a suicide.

Will you wait for me?
Are you willing to remain patient and stay by my side until we can be together again?

Death was the chorus - our lives frames in refrain.
Death served as the repeated theme or melody throughout our lives, encapsulating our experiences and actions.

Softly we sing notes better sung by our dead.
We softly sing melodies that would be more suited for those who have already passed away.

I'd rather sleep and see you soon than die alone in the waste of this nuclear catastrophe.
I would prefer to fall into a slumber and meet you again in the near future, rather than facing a solitary death surrounded by the aftermath of a destructive nuclear disaster.

We were made to create, you spoke us out of nothing. Out of the chaos we caused - naked came, shadows we leave.
We were designed to be creative beings, brought into existence through your spoken words from nothingness. From the disorder and turmoil we have brought upon ourselves, we emerged defenseless, and in the end, all that remains are the remnants of our presence.

Salt of the Earth: Preserve their songs. Light of World: Burn out the shadows. Infinite echoes of stifled screams - the abyss you created will ever stare back into me.
As representatives of humanity: hold onto and safeguard their stories and memories. As a guiding force of the world: eliminate the darkness and obscurity. The never-ending reverberations of silenced cries will forever haunt me, a reflection of the void that you have created.

Will you wait for me?
Are you willing to remain patient and stay by my side until we can be together again?

A lot of people compare Silent Planet with Oh, Sleeper.. I like Oh, Sleeper a lot, and I can see where they may be getting that parallel from, but I think Silent Planet kicks even more butt than Oh, Sleeper ever was able to. The music is a lot more atmospheric and progressive, Garrett's screams are really epic (I admit, Micah's are a little more wide in terms of range), the clean vocals of Silent Planet are a lot more powerful (no offense to Shane), and I just generally prefer the way Silent Planet writes their lyrics.. Garrett is a genius writer, though Micah's lyrics are extremely solid too.

Silent Planet and Phinehas.. they're both just insanely good. I was never much of a fan of this genre, but never before have I seen bands be so epic musically AND so genuine as people. Those two, along with Mouth of the South and Killswitch Engage, were responsible for my break into the heavier side of metal.

Silent Planet has different writing, it focuses on anti-conservative, pro-humane lyrics. Love it.

Phinehas is more gritty and emotional. Love it too.

Garrett Harlow

sean (from Phinehas) and garret (not me, but from silent planet) need to do a collaboration album.
