In August 2017, Diplo mentioned that he and Mark Ronson were working on a collaborative disco album, hinting at the project that would eventually become Silk City. While further details about the project remain undisclosed, the duo's representatives have been approached for additional information by media outlets.

The name "Silk City" appears to be a tribute to the Philadelphia venue and diner where Diplo began his DJ career. The duo had their first live performance at Governors Ball music festival. This festival also featured Jack White, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Eminem, N.E.R.D, and Travis Scott.

Both Diplo and Mark Ronson have had successful careers in their respective music ventures. Diplo, in addition to his work as a solo artist, is known for his involvement in the electronic dance music trio Major Lazer. Shortly after, on July 20, 2018, they released their second single, "Feel About You," featuring Mapei.
