Silly Sisters was a British folk duo that combined the vocal talents of Mad… Read Full Bio ↴Silly Sisters was a British folk duo that combined the vocal talents of Maddy Prior (of solo and Steeleye Span fame) and June Tabor (famous for both her solo pieces and works with such folk greats as Martin Simpson, Richard Thompson and Oysterband). Initially recording as Maddy Prior & June Tabor, the duo released the album entitled "Silly Sisters" in 1976 album as their first collaborative effort. The pair later adopted the name Silly Sisters for subsequent projects.

I've only found the Silly Sisters now, stunning vocals. Saw a show on BBC where they song 4 loom weaver, the harmonies blew me away. Great post

I love this song and this album so much. The music changed me in a wonderful way when I discovered the "folk revival" through the "Silly Sisters" album in the 80's.

@Fooliccini Boy, that is a big ask. The guitar on this track is played by Martin Carthy who is known as a master of these tunings. It just might be something approximating the C tuning he sometimes has used, but am not sure. There is another version of this song (different again) by Martin Carthy on Youtube. Could be worth a listen to see if you can work it out also. -- Rgds.

Yes, and he played an equally brilliant (but very different) version of this song circa 1965 on the "Changes" album, by Julie Felix.-- All other tracks had John Renbourn on guitar, and Martin cleaned up, with a different but brilliant arrangement of this song. I would post it as an audio only, but album cover photo would be a problem. I have already checked the 'net for artwork; they don't have it. There is a different photo on Amazon, but a USA album.

@ParArdua - In my experience, if you pay too much mind to trolls and cretins by deleting, blocking, or arguing with them, they're likely getting exactly what they wanted in the first place: attention. Not to mention the fact that many of them will just create new accounts. It's rare that I acknowledge their piteous existence at all as I did above today. What can I say? I'm human. Besides, I think it's better to leave them exposed so all users can see them for exactly what they are.

You seem to know your stuff. I'm looking for the name of the song and album it's from that goes, "I have been searching through the timeless past. Because of you, my love, because of you..." etc. It's definitely them but I've not heard all of their work and don't know which album to buy... any idea?

I just discovered J.T., born in 1947.. along with who else?
Maddy Prior, Sandy Denny and Annie Haslam. Something wonderful in the water that year.

My fave Tabor piece, my fave ... Celtic/trad-from-UK singer, although Dolores Keane is my other one, and my fave bit of Carthy. (And why does the vid say Dolores Keane? Can the poster change that?)

This song was written by Robbie Burns, so whoever was King of England would be the scottish monarch at the time.

@Clothosx Well I first heard this in 1974 when a school chum lent to me the casette tape of the album. It still grabs me the song is so perfect in its simplicity. If you can't appreciate this you have your musical taste in your arse. The same friend also lent to me Songs of love and hate by Cohen, I tell you for a thirteen year old he had some class.

But the voice is still sweet. And who is to replace the "old hags" Maddie and June when they 're dead and gone? I'd give a vote to them girls in "The Wailin Jennys" among several but don't put any in the ground quite yet.
