Latchkey Kids
Silversun Pickups Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You keep dancing around
What you want so bad
Please concentrate, hear me out
You might get caught but if you want
You can keep your fingers crossed

We're outside and free from all tethers
So get off the floor if you're under the weather
C'mon
The Latchkey kids have all come together
So unlock the door, it'll make you feel better
C'mon

We've been sneaking around
But we do it lightly
No more middle school tongues
If you show up unarmed
Be still our beating hearts

We're outside and free from all tethers
So get off the floor if you're under the weather
What's in store is not so unusual
The latchkey kids have all come together
So unlock the door, it'll make you feel better
If it's not flesh and blood that leads you on honey
Then unlock the door
Unlock the door and move on

Be still, our beating hearts
Keep your fingers crossed

You keep dancing around
What you want so bad, bad

We're outside and free from all tethers
So get off the floor if you're under the weather
What's in store is not so unusual
The latchkey kids have all come together
So unlock the door, it'll make you feel better
If it's not flesh and blood that leads you on honey
Then unlock the door and move on

So get off the floor if you're under the weather
And unlock the door

Overall Meaning

The song "Latchkey Kids" by Silversun Pickups is a fast-paced track that speaks to the youth and their desire to break free from their current situation and live life on their own terms. The lyrics speak of wanting something badly, yet being hesitant to pursue it because of the fear of getting caught. The verse calls for the listener to concentrate and hear the message, to keep their fingers crossed that they can get what they want without getting caught. The chorus tells of the freedom that lies beyond the door, encouraging the listener to unlock the door and step out into the world.

The lyrics also speak to a sense of belonging and community among the youth, with the reference to the "Latchkey kids" coming together. The latchkey kids were a generation of children who grew up in a period when both parents worked outside the home, so they were often left alone after school to let themselves in with a key. This phrase takes on a new meaning in the song, referring to a group of young people who are self-sufficient and free to do as they please.

The bridge of the song speaks to the fear and vulnerability that comes with pursuing something new, but ultimately encourages the listener to take the leap and move forward.

Overall, "Latchkey Kids" is a song about breaking free from the constraints of society and taking control of one's own life. It speaks to the courage it takes to step out into the world, the sense of community that comes from shared experiences, and the ultimate reward of living a life free from tethers.

Silversun Pickups has to be the best soft alternative band to ever exist.

Haha, I realize how old this original post is. But it’s never too late to educate/enlighten or broaden another future persons potentially limited and unfortunate narrow view or simply open their minds musically 🎶 🌅

Ever heard of MGMT, Brand New, Cage The Elephant, Empire Of The Sun, Modest Mouse, Manchester Orchestra? Silversun Pickups alongside the well established and better known groups I listed are more widely and generally known as “Indie”, “Indie Rock” or “Shoegaze/Dream Pop” etc. The beauty in music however is how individually unique each genre of groups can produce instrumentally and how much diverse creativity can be jam packed into one group that actually can make it difficult to classify them into one single sub genre 😊 🎵

That’s part of what makes music extraordinarily and ambitiously driven ❤️

is that what the genre would be termed? I am so musically stupid. I love this band though

Snotty Boy

I think it really depends on the song. Three seed is really soothing (almost to another level) this one's pretty soft, but like someone else said, they're older albums have some heavier stuff too. Kissing family is pretty soft and then he randomly starts screaming.

VeggyZ

I don't even think you can call them "soft" since they have plenty of songs that ...aren't. They're damn good though, no argument there.

This is not normally my style of music, but I must say there's something very special about this band. I'm certain they'll be remembered for a long time. I'm calling it before it happens -- these guys are a future classic.

As the other person said “Alternative Rock” but it’s more widely and generally known as well as other many other great similar groups as “Indie Rock” or “Shoegaze/Dream Pop”.
