His musical career started at age 17 while he was doing his military service in the recently formed FAR (Revolutionary Armed Forces) created in late 1961 after the failed invasion of Cuba by the U.S.A. led mainly by the C.I.A. and the Cuban exiles in that country, the self-titled "Gusanos", ordered by former president John F. Kennedy.
The bombings by the U.S.A. where targeted mainly towards the urban settlements in La Habana, Santiago de Cuba and San Antonio de los Baños, the latter in which Silvio was living at the time. He was working as an educator for the Alphabetization Program of the Revolution in which he taught History, Mathematics, Geography, Grammar and Politics.
Esteban Baños was the friend that taught him how to play guitar while they were in the army, it was around 1964 when Silvio wrote his first songs. In 1967 he finished his Army training and started his career as a musician mainly as a solo artist but also shortly as a part of the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC (GESI).

The lyrics of Silvio Rodriguez's song, El Sol No Da De Beber, are a tribute to love and its fleeting nature. The opening lines describe the comfortable refuge of two lovers and their intimate moments stripped bare. The beauty of their connection is contrasted with the day-to-day grind of life, where time is consumed by the non-stop clock of society.
The second verse speaks to the ephemeral nature of happiness and how it's often shrouded by the judgmental eyes of others. The singer of the song, however, finds solace in their own version of reality, created by their shared love and mutual understanding. They encourage their lover to take as much as they can, to stay up late with them, and to push against the limitations of the world that seeks to impose its rules on them.
In the final verse, the singer vows to pour his heart and soul into his love, without caring who may judge him for it. He promises to tell the story of their sun that sheds tears for the universe, ever waiting for the day when it can light up the world.
Overall, the lyrics of El Sol No Da De Beber give listeners a peek into the intense connection shared between two lovers who refuse to be tamed by the societal constraints of their time.
