His musical career started at age 17 while he was doing his military service in the recently formed FAR (Revolutionary Armed Forces) created in late 1961 after the failed invasion of Cuba by the U.S.A. led mainly by the C.I.A. and the Cuban exiles in that country, the self-titled "Gusanos", ordered by former president John F. Kennedy.
The bombings by the U.S.A. where targeted mainly towards the urban settlements in La Habana, Santiago de Cuba and San Antonio de los Baños, the latter in which Silvio was living at the time. He was working as an educator for the Alphabetization Program of the Revolution in which he taught History, Mathematics, Geography, Grammar and Politics.
Esteban Baños was the friend that taught him how to play guitar while they were in the army, it was around 1964 when Silvio wrote his first songs. In 1967 he finished his Army training and started his career as a musician mainly as a solo artist but also shortly as a part of the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC (GESI).

Cual solamente puede ser libre
En esta tierra, en este instante
Y soy feliz porque soy gigante
Amo a una mujer clara
Que amo y me ama
Sin pedir nada
Que no es lo mismo
Pero es igual
Y si esto fuera poco
Tengo mis cantos
Que poco a poco
Muelo y rehago
Habitando el tiempo
Como le cuadra
A un hombre despierto
Soy feliz
Soy un hombre feliz
Y quiero que me perdonen
Por este día
Los muertos de mi felicidad
Y si esto fuera poco
Tengo mis cantos
Que poco a poco
Muelo y rehago
Habitando el tiempo
Como le cuadra
A un hombre despierto
Soy feliz
Soy un hombre feliz
Y quiero que me perdonen
Por este día
Los muertos de mi felicidad
The song Pequeña serenata diurna by Silvio Rodriguez is a celebration of freedom and happiness. The opening lines, "Vivo en un país libre, cual solamente puede ser libre en esta tierra, en este instante" (I live in a free country, which can only be free in this land, in this moment) set the tone for the song, emphasizing the importance of the present moment and the joy that comes with living in a place where one is free to be oneself. The singer then goes on to express his happiness at being a "giant" in this free land, suggesting that he feels empowered and liberated by the freedoms he enjoys.
The song then shifts focus to the singer's love for a "clear woman," whom he loves and who loves him back without asking for much in return. He notes that this love is not the same as asking for nothing, but it is similar, emphasizing the complexities of love and the different ways in which it can manifest. The singer is also grateful for his music, which he "muelo y rehago" (grinds and remakes) over time, shaping it into a reflection of his own awake state. This music is an extension of his happiness, and he feels fortunate to be able to create it.
The song concludes with the singer declaring his happiness and asking forgiveness for enjoying it so much. He acknowledges the struggles and suffering of others, but in this moment, he is simply happy and wants to revel in it. The repetition of the final lines, "Soy feliz, soy un hombre feliz, y quiero que me perdonen por este día los muertos de mi felicidad" (I am happy, I am a happy man, and I ask for forgiveness from the dead of my happiness), emphasize the singer's joy and positivity, despite the shadows of history and memory that haunt him.
