Haunted House
Simmons Gene Lyrics

I just moved in my new house today
Movin' was hard but I got squared away
Bells started ringin' and chains rattled loud
Knew I'd moved in a haunted house

Still I made up my mind to stay
Nothin' was a gonna drive me away
When I seen some that gave me the creep
Had a one big eye and two big feet

Stood right still and I did the freeze
He did the stroll right up to me
Made a note where feet sound like a drum
Sayin' you'll be here when the mornin' comes

Say yes I'll be here when the mornin' comes
I'll be right here and I ain't gonna run
I bought this house now you know I'm boss
Ain't no hate, you gonna run me off

In my kitchen my stove was a blazin' hot
Coffee was boilin' in the pot
The grease had melted in my hand
I had a hunk of meat in my hand

From out of space there's a sale man
On a hot stove was pots and pans
Say that's hot I began to shout
Drank a hot coffee from the spout

He ate the raw meat right from my hand
I drank the hot grease from the fryin' pan
Look to me, sayin' you better run
Don't be here when the mornin' comes

Say yes I'll be here when the mornin' comes

I'll be right here and I ain't gonna run
I bought this house now you know I'm boss

Overall Meaning

Gene Simmons' song "Haunted House" tells the story of a man who moves into a new house but discovers it is haunted. In the first verse, the singer describes the difficulty of moving but manages to get everything squared away. However, as he starts to settle in, he hears bells ringing and chains rattling, leaving him spooked. Despite this, he resolves to stay and not be driven away by anything. In the second verse, the singer encounters a "one big eye" and "two big feet" creature that scares him but does not run. The creature approaches him, makes a note of his presence, and disappears. In the final verse, the singer is cooking in the kitchen when a salesman appears out of nowhere and starts eating raw meat and drinking hot grease. The salesman warns the singer to leave before morning, but the singer stands his ground, convinced he's the boss of his haunted house.

The song is an interesting take on the classic haunted house story. Instead of being scared and fleeing, the singer decides to take control and stand his ground. He refuses to let any supernatural forces drive him out of his new home. This determination could be interpreted as a metaphor for facing one's fears head-on in real life. The song's upbeat and jazzy tune also adds a layer of irony to the scary lyrics, making the overall tone more humorous than terrifying.

Every Halloween I have this playing for the trick or treaters on our front porch. Most of them don't really get it but the parents get a big kick out of it.

Traysldnx69

I was 9 in 1964 and this was my favorite Halloween song and it still is John fogerty does a great job on this live

Lloyd Worcester

The best version of this song was by Roy Buchanan and he did a wicked guitar solo on it What a great tune

Daniel Hudelson

Yeah, that's the version I've been listening to ever since I bought that album that introduced me to that amazing guitarist. Roy's is faster, and I don't catch the lyrics like this one - but never actually cared, what with all them killer guitar licks.
