Coming of age in the 60s must’ve been a magical time to say the least - I can only imagine. Arguably the most defining decade of the 20th century culturally speaking.

I envy you so much for that - and thank you so much for the contributions that your generation made to art and music - groundbreaking songs and artist that still resonates half a century later.

My third long term relationship and another miserable one, too. At least this time I stayed and he left; the last time, I had to leave and ended up on the streets. i’ve always done that. Not saying that it’s a good personality trait of mine. Not saying it’s a thing someone should do in general. Just that I have always tended to be an introvert loner and have always had difficulty making friends. It’s a relatively common sort of personality in humans. Anyways, us millennials made a new word for it. “Ambivert”…. sometimes introverted isolated loner, sometimes gregarious, satisfied with either one. So, I guess I am still not a true introvert. But sort of. And have always been satisfied to be social or to be a loner. And I’m prickly and people always think I am angry because of the way my voice sounds. Which I am not. But which hilariously then causes me vexation because people assume it just because of the way my voice sounds, naturallly.😂 So I go away and I am done with them.

Brilliant lyrics paired to melody. A stubborn and deeply depressed person who won't or can't come to grips with their situation and tries to convince themselves otherwise, the melody puts it plain. The fortress is a paper tiger self built, while looking down on happy people. Lashing out, been hurt and looking for excuses for how they act.

the lyrics of this song describe perfectly the pyshcological complex called "Negative Mother Complex" It is a beautiful artistic representation of one of the complexes that we all can fall prey to as we develop, especially as young men. The sad part is that many probably do not get the proper help, and this complex is not transcended, and there is a big risk that the men end up trapped in this attitude towards life. Many men in Academia embody this complex and also very successful business people (i was one of them), so afraid to be hurt that we just focus on our "intellect" (books) or our personal passion (poetry) and we are still children or teenagers inside, unable to be truly open to love due to fear of rejection.

it hurts to admit this when one realizes that this has been the complex that has been running one's life.

But even realizing that one has been in the grasp of this complex, represents a potential way out of it, at any age that one realizes about it.

I am in the process of getting out, for anyone outthere relating to this, read about the Negative Mother Complex, Mother Complex, Devouring Mother complex and Jungian Psychoanalysis. All the best.

Being "a rock" is to do with an individual not allowing/risking human contact because they do not want to take a chance on anything around being human: dancing, laughing, crying, caring. Right now the covid-19 thing has just turned us all into human, potentially-lethal, bug-carriers. Not the same thing at all.

This is a bittersweet song. Without loving, we never cry but we lose that which makes us human. A Rock feels no pain but it has no humanity. Sometimes I wonder if it is better to love and be hurt, or to be lonely and never feel.

I don't know. I am 50/50. I guess, if I had to put my hand upon my heart I would not have been without the love and I am talking not just about romantic love but it is so hard when it is snatched away, either by someone else's choice or by death. I am at a stage in my life where I pretty much cry all the time about the losses: mum, dad, my eldest, most loved sister, all my aunts and uncles and friends (the latest in June). That does not include the people who chose to walk away and they are legion (and, I guess the ones Paul is singing about here.) Love is a painful thing. Being a rock is way easier.

I identified with this song for many years until I couldn't stand feeling so lonely day after day. I realised then that I wasn't meant to live the rest of my life alone and decided to really try to get over my shyness and start acting friendlier to people. I always had a very low self esteem and relationships terrified me but I forced myself to allow people into my life and I slowly began to make friends. One day when I least expected it I met someone very special and we became inseparable almost immediately. We fell in love and I have been living happily together with my wife Joni for almost twenty years now. I believe islands do cry.
