A Most Pecuilar Man
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He was a most peculiar man
That's what Mrs. Riordan said and she should know
She lived upstairs from him
She said he was a most peculiar man

He was a most peculiar man
He lived all alone within a house
Within a room, within himself
A most peculiar man

He had no friends, he seldom spoke
And no one in turn ever spoke to him
'Cause he wasn't friendly and he didn't care
And he wasn't like them
Oh, no, he was a most peculiar man

He died last Saturday
He turned on the gas and he went to sleep
With the windows closed so he'd never wake up
To his silent world and his tiny room
And Mrs. Riordan says he has a brother somewhere
Who should be notified soon

And all the people said, "What a shame that he's dead
But wasn't he a most peculiar man?"

Overall Meaning

The song "A Most Peculiar Man" by Simon & Garfunkel is a somber tribute to a man who had a different way of life that made him isolated and misunderstood from the rest of society. The lyrics speak of a man who was peculiar, a term that could mean odd, eccentric or different. Mrs. Riordan, who lived upstairs from the peculiar man, provides the proof of his singularity as she labeled him a "most peculiar man."

The song goes on to describe his uniqueness. He lived alone in a small room within a house and barely interacted with anyone. He didn't have any friends, and it was difficult for anyone to speak to him. However, the song makes it clear that he wasn't unfriendly, nor did he care about being different. He was content to be himself and to live his life as he saw fit.

Towards the end of the song, the man passes away. He apparently took his own life by turning on the gas and going to sleep. Even in death, the man was isolated and alone. The last lyric of the song brings a moment of reflection as the people said, "What a shame that he's dead. But wasn't he a most peculiar man?" The song highlights the cruel reality of societal norms and how they can relegate some individuals to the fringes of society.

O, no-o-o!
He was a most peculiar man

He died last Saturday
He turned on the gas! and he went to sleep!
With the windows closed!
So he'd never wake up!
To his silent world!
And his tiny room!
And Mrs Reardon says he has a brother somewhere!

Who should be notified so-oo-oon...

And all the people said,
What a shame that he's dead,
But wasn't he a most peculiar man?

This song makes me cry everytime. It reminds me of my brother. He took his life..hecwas only 18. He was abused and bullied. He was socially awkward..and he hated people cuz they hurt him. I loved him though. And knew his true heart. Kindness..love..acceptance..beauty. He was truly a gem and he should not have died so young.

I think you've kind of missed the point. The man wasn't 'peculiar', he was depressed, but no one cared to ask if he was alright they just dismissed him as an odd ball. Even after he took his own life they still didn't change their minds about him. It's not a celebration of our differences so much as a damning indictment of the meanness of the human spirit, sometimes.

Many people die of loneliness without anybody knowing it.

For thos uuondering, this post is 4 years old. Old posts seemed to have had a different system in place where replies weren't a thing so people just. answered. So you'd seen conversations set around different comments that are 4 years old and it seems confusing at first but that's what's happening.
Also I agree very much with this interpratation of the song. That seems to be exactly what it is about.

@boneneedle3360

What? The songwriters missed the point or what?
