Baby Driver
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My daddy was the family bassman
My mamma was an engineer
And I was born one dark gray morn
With music coming in my ears
In my ears

They call me Baby Driver
And once upon a pair of wheels
I hit the road and I'm gone
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
Ba ba ba ba
Scoot down the road
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
Shine a light, ooo ooo oo, ooo ooo oo

My daddy was a prominent frogman
My mamma's in the Naval reserve
When I was young I carried a gun
But I never got the chance to serve
I did not serve

They call me Baby Driver
And once upon a pair of wheels
I hit the road and I'm gone
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
Ba ba ba ba
Scoot down the road
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel

Ba ba ba ba, mmm ba ba ba ba

My daddy got a big promotion
My mamma got a raise in pay
There's no one home, we're all alone
Oh come into my room and play
Yes we can play

I'm not talking about your pigtails
But I'm talking 'bout your sex appeal
I hit the road and I'm gone
What's my number

I wonder how your engines feel
Ba ba ba ba
Scoot down the road
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel

To oo ooo to oo ooo to oo ooo oo ooo oo ooo oo ooo

Overall Meaning

The song Baby Driver by Simon & Garfunkel is about a young man who loves driving and travelling. The first verse introduces Baby Driver's background. His father played bass, his mother was an engineer, and he was born with an affinity for music. The second verse reveals that Baby Driver carries a gun but never gets to serve, referencing his missed opportunity for military service.

The chorus "They call me Baby Driver, and once upon a pair of wheels, I hit the road and I'm gone. What's my number? I wonder how your engines feel" signifies that Baby Driver loves driving fast cars and beautiful women. The "number" represents his unique identity as a driver. He enjoys the thrill of the ride and wonders how the engines feel.

The third verse is about Baby Driver's current situation. His parents are not home, and he convinces his lover to join him and play. He compliments her sex appeal but is ultimately more interested in hitting the road and driving fast. The repeated refrain "ba ba ba ba, scoot down the road" is a suggestion to keep moving forward.

Overall, Baby Driver by Simon & Garfunkel is a playful, upbeat song about a young man's love of driving and adventure.

My daddy was the family bassman
My mamma was an engineer
And I was born one dark gray morn
With music coming in my ears
In my ears
They call me Baby Driver
And once upon a pair of wheels
hit the road and I'm gone
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
Ba ba ba ba

Scoot down the road
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
Shine a light, ooo ooo oo, ooo ooo oo
My daddy was a prominent frogman
My mamma's in the Naval reserve
When I was young I carried a gun
But I never got the chance to serve
I did not serve
They call me Baby Driver
And once upon a pair of wheels
hit the road and I'm gone
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
Ba ba ba ba
Scoot down the road
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
Ba ba ba ba, mmm ba ba ba ba
음,
My daddy got a big promotion
My mamma got a raise in pay
There's no one home, we're all alone
Oh come into my room and play
Yes we can play
I'm not talking about your pigtails
But I'm talking 'bout your sex appeal
I hit the road and I'm gone
What's my number
I wonder how your engines feel
Ba ba ba ba
음,
Scoot down the road
What's my number

I love Simon and Garfunkel but I haven't heard this particular song before watching the film. And then I'm watching the end titles and hear this... and it blows my mind. Our world need more creative people like those who had decided to make an awesome film based on a Simon and Garfunkel's song. May be they should make a movie about Mrs Robinson (just kidding)

This song proves how musically advanced Simon and Garfunkle (Paul Simon in particular) were. I recommend folks get the whole album, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" which this song is from. It still holds up today.

@Aleksandar Djuric He's speakng in general, not just this song.

Franlo

@Aleksandar Djuric nothing. This is JJ Cale-ish... People always use the terms of being "Advanced on time" or "This doesn´t get the recognition it deserves". I mean, they´re awesome but we could just say that and it´ll be fine LUL

Beach Chaos

Will definitely give it a listen
