Boxer
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles
Such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station
Running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places
Only they would know

Lie la lie, lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie

Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores
On Seventh Avenue
I do declare
There were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there
La la la la la la la

Lie la lie, lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie

Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters
Aren't bleeding me
Leading me
Going home

In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
Or cut him 'til he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains

Lie la lie, lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie

Lie la la la lie la lie, lie la lie
Lie la la la lie la lie, la la la la lie

Overall Meaning

"The Boxer" is a Simon & Garfunkel song that tells the story of a young man who leaves his family behind to try and make a name for himself in the world. However, he finds that life on his own is much harder than he had anticipated as he struggles to find work and becomes drawn into the seedy world of Seventh Avenue. The lyrics speak of his disappointment and disillusionment with the empty promises he encounters on his journey. The chorus of "Lie la lie" reflects his sense of isolation and disconnection from the world.

The final verse of the song brings in a new character, the boxer, who serves as a symbol of strength and perseverance. The boxer has been beaten down repeatedly but still chooses to continue fighting, to "carry the reminders" of his past losses with him. The singer expresses a desire to return home, where he can escape the harsh winters and find comfort in familiar surroundings. However, his final line acknowledges that the fighter still remains, suggesting that despite his struggles he will continue to persevere.

Overall, "The Boxer" is a poignant story of the difficulties and disappointments that come with trying to make it in the world on your own, but also the strength and resilience that can be found in facing those challenges head-on.

"In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
'I am leaving, I am leaving'
But the fighter still remains"

Just one of the great lyrical passages ever.

i am old. I am at the end of my life now..Wow, what a ride. This song just reminds me of how much time has passed and how quickly it goes. If you are young, Im not preaching and your life is yours to live as you choose, but trust me--The days are long but the years are short.

@NebMunb

Well put. How old are you if I may ask? I hope you're not suffering from anything serious. My Grandfather is 95, and he recently was told he has a good year left in him. He has lived a great life. A wife of 75 years, 6 grandkids, 1 great grandson, and he has been to pretty much every country in the world. He's a good man, and I'm going to miss him so much when he is gone.

"Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest." Ain't that the truth 😂

@KathieRopele74

absolutely the truth.

@KurtHansonIan

Depending on context because everytime, at the moment, which of the two participants in actuality knows "the truth." The victor only will speak of "a truth." The vanquished are quelled for a time, 'tis all.

Onward …! 🍺 + (💁🏻‍♀📝) = ⁉

Yup it's called confirmation bias.
