Bridge Over Troubled Water
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all, all
I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part, oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh, if you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water" is a song about being a faithful and supportive friend. In times of difficulty, when exhaustion, sadness, and pain take over, the singer reassures their friend that they are there for them, to hold them up and help them feel safe. He will be a constant support for his or her friend when no one else is available. The lyrics speak of the willingness to stand by someone through their struggle and pain, to borrow the weight of their problems and carry them to brighter days. When the friend needs someone to listen or a shoulder to lean on, he will be there, as reliable as a bridge over troubled water. This song is a beautiful ode to friendship.

No fancy dance moves, or costume. He just kept 500,000 people dead silent with his voice. That is true talent!

Yes .that's because they could sing back then .NO help from computers and stuff !!
Today cannot sing live because they can't sing...
Heard heard them sing years later. They sound just as good today as they did thirty years ago

ViperOfMino

This is amazing, but it's hilarious you say "dead silent" when you can hear the audience yelling and talking in the background through all of it except the parts where it's just simply too loud to hear the audience in the background haha.

Robert Smith

@ViperOfMino It's hilarious that you actually think Art can sing loudly enough to drown out half a million people! Don't be so darned literal! There is clapping and cheering at the start' but you do not hear the crowd through out. Perhaps dead quiet was the wrong phrase', The crowd is not yelling and cheering through out like with Elvis, or the Beatles.

ViperOfMino

@Robert Smith Well...I'll give you that. They're still not exactly silent but I can definitely meet you in the middle and admit they're not nearly as loud as I made them sound. They're definitely not quiet, but indeed not LOUD loud like your example of Elvis.

Also it's not his voice that drowns him out, it's the rest of the band that drowned them out.

Either way, it's an amazing performance of this song.

Just a 500,000 people making the missing symbol clash

I attended this concert with my Wife, Kathy. Kath died a few years ago. Each time I hear this concert, I know that somewhere in that vast crowd, our claps and cheers are heard, together.
