El Condor Pasa
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail
Yes I would, if I could, I surely would
I'd rather be a hammer than a nail
Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would

Away, I'd rather sail away
Like a swan that's here and gone
A man gets tied up to the ground
He gives the world its saddest sound
Its saddest sound

I'd rather be a forest than a street
Yes I would, if I could, I surely would
I'd rather feel the earth beneath my feet
Yes I would, if I only could, I surely would

I was in bed, seven years old, and unable to sleep as usual (a lifetime insomniac) when it came on the radio. My heart soared. They didn't announce it, though, so I didn't know the name of the song or who sang it. The phrase "El Condor Pasa" wasn't in the lyrics, but I never forgot that song. By the age of twelve I'd "found" Simon and Garfunkel and finally learned the title, but I didn't speak Spanish, and felt so bad that I didn't know what it meant. When I got into junior high and signed up for Spanish, the first question I asked in class was, "What does 'El Condor Pasa' mean?" The teacher chuckled and and started singing, "I'd rather be a hammer than a nail, oh yes I would, if I could, I surely would!" I grinned in disbelief (too young to understand that the song was more from his time than mine) as he stopped, and then made a flowing motion with his hands and said, "The condor flies by."
