Go Tell It On The Mountain
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hallelujah!
Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
Jesus Christ is born

Down the lonely manger
The humble Christ was born
And God sent salvation
That blessed Christmas morn

Hallelujah!
Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
Jesus Christ is born

While shepherds kept their watch
O'er silent flocks by night
Behold throughout the heavens
There shown a holy light

Hallelujah!
Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
Jesus Christ is born

Down the lonely manger
The humble Christ was born
And God sent salvation
That blessed Christmas morn

Hallelujah!
Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain

Jesus Christ is born
Jesus Christ is born

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Simon & Garfunkel's song "Go Tell It on the Mountain" are a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The song begins with an expression of joy in the form of a hallelujah, followed by the instruction to spread the news of Jesus' birth far and wide, over the hills and everywhere. The focus then turns to the humble circumstances of Jesus' birth, in a lonely manger, yet the significance of the event is not lost, as it is believed that God sent salvation into the world on that blessed Christmas morn. The song then references the story of the shepherds, who were the first to hear about the birth of Jesus, as they were watching over their flocks by night. They were witness to a holy light that shone throughout the heavens, heralding the good news of Jesus' arrival. The song ends with another joyful hallelujah and a reiteration of the message that Jesus Christ is born.

One thing I love about the album Wednesday Morning 3 AM is how Paul and Art's voices are completely separated in the right and left channels, so you can hear firsthand the directions their voices take in their harmonies. And this song is a perfect example.

I have just thought about it)))

Oh my! I hadn't realised. Thanks for the tip. By the way, you ever tried listening to Sgt Peppers on Left or Right? It gives you another experience of those songs.

Jamás habrá otro dúo como ellos. Esas voces son y serán mágicas por siempre.

Thanks for this album. I had forgotten about it! I remember liking that Jewish guys were singing about Jesus because I'm Jewish and wanted to sing gospel songs.

Happy Chanukah, Karen! I believe it starts on December 12th this year.

@emmao3870

I honestly think there's something quite cheerful about two Jewish men singing Christmas/Christian songs. :)

God bless us, everyone.

Art Garfunkel is a Christian. Maybe not then but is now.

@McFluff33

@Wilmington United Methodist Church No he isn't. I have no idea where you got the idea he became a christian. He was born and raised Jewish and never converted.
