Keep the Customer Satisfied
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Gee but it's great to be back home
Home is where I want to be
I've been on the road so long my friend
And if you came along
I know you couldn't disagree

It's the same old story, yeah
Everywhere I go
I get slandered, libeled
I hear words I never heard in the Bible
And I'm one step ahead of the shoe shine
Two steps away from the county line
Just trying to keep my customers satisfied
Satisfied

Deputy Sheriff said to me
Tell me what you come here for, boy
You better get your bags and flee
You're in trouble boy
And you're heading into more

It's the same old story
Everywhere I go
I get slandered, libeled
I hear words I never heard in the Bible
And I'm one step ahead of the shoe shine
Two steps away from the county line
Just trying to keep my customers satisfied
Satisfied

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa

It's the same old story
Everywhere I go
I get slandered, libeled
I hear words I never heard in the Bible
And I'm so tired, so tired

But I'm trying to keep my customers satisfied
Satisfied

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel's song 'Keep the Customer Satisfied' depict the struggle and challenges of a musician who has spent an extended amount of time on the road. The opening lines express relief at being back home, the place where he belongs. The singer then admits that he's been on the road for far too long, and if someone were to ask him if he's had enough of it, he would agree.

The chorus repeats the phrase 'It's the same old story, everywhere I go,' which creates a sense of monotony and frustration, further emphasized by the line 'I get slandered, libeled, I hear words I never heard in the Bible.' These lines could be interpreted as the musician facing criticism or backlash wherever he goes, and the words he hears are so unfamiliar to him that they are as if they came from another world.

The final verse alludes to a confrontation with the law by way of a Deputy Sheriff who warns the singer that he is in trouble and that he should flee. Despite adversity, the musician is committed to keeping his fans happy and satisfied, but the constant struggle and negative experiences have taken a toll and he is now fatigued.

"And I'm one step ahead of the shoeshine, two steps away from the county line..." Not sure why but I've always loved this line.
