Last Night I Had a Stragest Dream
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
The room was filled with men
And the paper they were signing said
They'd never fight again

And when the papers all were signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands end bowed their heads
And grateful prayers were prayed
And the people in the streets below
Were dancing round and round
And guns and swords and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground

Last night I had the strangest dream
I ever dreamed before

I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war

Overall Meaning

The above lyrics are from Simon & Garfunkel's song "Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream" and the song is a beautiful piece of music that speaks about peace, love, and harmony, and how it is still achievable even when it seems impossible. The song talks about a dream the songwriter had in which the world had agreed to put an end to war. The dream was a powerful one and hugely symbolic, as it represented the unified efforts of the world to bring an end to violence and bloodshed. The lyrics describe how the world leaders gathered in a mighty room to sign a document that would end all wars. The paper they were signing, according to the song, said "They'd never fight again."

The second verse is even more evocative and touching, as it talks about grateful prayers being said and people in the streets below were dancing round and round. The image of guns, swords, and uniforms scattered on the ground shows the powerful symbol of peace. The song ends with a repetition of the first verse, repeating the message that the songwriter had had the strangest yet most powerful dream of all.

Overall, the song is a powerful message of hope, unity, and love. It presents a beautiful dream of hope that can resonate with any individual who dreams of a peaceful world.

It would be great if human beings
Were great at being human
And if all of mankind
Were made up of kind men
It would be wonderful if common knowledge
Was knowledge commonly known
And if the light from being enlightened
Into every heart was shown

It would be fantastic if the war to end all wars
Was the last war that we fought
It would be amazing if we learned the lessons
From every lesson we were taught
It would be cool if our freedom
To us was freely granted
And if every seed of kindness
Would grow wherever planted

It would be glorious if neighbors were neighborly
And prejudice a forgotten word
It would be awesome if we shared everything
And being greedy was absurd
It would be spectacular if the golden rule
Was golden to every man
And the good things that we ever did
Was everything that we can.

Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream
Letra em português (lyrics in portuguese)
-----------------------------------
Noite passada eu tive o mais sonho estranho

e armas e espadas e uniformes
estavam espalhadas no chão

Noite passada eu tive o mais sonho estranho
que eu jamais havia sonhado antes

Eu sonhei que o mundo todo tinha concordado
em pôr fim à guerra

@Andrew Cascio 1938 Germany annexes Austria
1938 England and France hand over Sudetanland to germany to prevent war, Germany assures on the Munich treaty he won't invade Czechoslovakia. Chamberlain declares peace in our time.
1939 Germany breaks the treaty and invades the Czechs and they surrender
1939 Germany invades Poland, breaking a treaty which required France and England to declare war.

This is where you are confused, France and England made it clear what they would do if Germany invaded. Germany was the aggressor.

He had no intention of stopping at poland, he already had plans to invade england and france. He had the invasion of France already planned out and his troops and airforce were training for their attacks on england.

Germany wasn't stupid. They weren't just thinking up what to do on the moment. They had their war plans worked out years in advance.

If you think that germany would stop after poland, you are as naive as Chamberlain.

The way you are talking, it sounds like you think Germany was minding its own business, concerned with only their domestic issues, and suddenly, for no reason, they were attacked by england & france and had to defend themselves.

In spite of its illusionary theme I love this song.

Otyugra Media

Try to keep in mind, this song is about people solving conflict through communication, and the joy that would come out of the miracle of the world no longer in conflict. It isn't meant to be anything more than wishful thinking. Is it really so bad to wish about a world were we no longer need to die for our causes and have no reason for war in the first place?

Jason Lee

It's not wishful thinking..its a goal we need to reach..

Uriel238

@Tony Fantasia Yes, if only our right to live (and to eat and sleep in safety) didn't depend on our capacity to work (or being liked by someone rich).

Sengiko

Unfortunately we humans still need conflict to ignite some fire inside of us. I wish it wasn’t that way and maybe we have been conditioned by everything that surrounds us to be this way, but talking behind peoples backs about a conflict, talking about wars (conflict), playing war games, seeing war movies and this is not limited to wars: romance conflicts, fist fights, political discussions and discussions in general are all conflicts in which we unfortunately focus too much on. I guess that understanding one another is the answer to progress, but that will take a long time

Sengiko

@Tony Fantasia people said the same about the industrial revolution, think about it!

Tony Fantasia

No war = mass unemployment..... think about it!

LOVE THIS SONG .....JUST BEAUTIFUL

That was not funny

The song is peculiar, I don't live a life hoping for peace, but this song sure makes me wish for it.
