Leaves That Are Green
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song
I'm twenty-two now but I won't be for long
Time hurries on
And the leaves that are green
Turn to brown
And they wither in the wind
And they crumble in your hand
Once my heart was filled with the love of a girl

I held her close but she faded in the night
Like a poem I meant to write
And the leaves that are green
Turn to brown
And they wither with the wind
And they crumble in your hand
I threw a pebble in a brook
And watched the ripples run away

And they never made a sound
And the leaves that are green
Turn to brown
And they wither iwith the wind
And they crumble in your hand
Hello, hello, hello, hello
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
That's all there is
And the leaves that are green
Turn to brown

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song.
I'm twenty-two now but I won't be for long
Time hurries on.
And the leaves that are green turn to brown,
And they wither with the wind,
And they crumble in your hand.

Once my heart was filled with the love of a girl.
I held her close, but she faded in the night
Like a poem I meant to write.
And the leaves that are green turn to brown,
And they wither with the wind,
And they crumble in your hand.

I threw a pebble in a brook
And watched the ripples run away
And they never made a sound.
And the leaves that are green turned to brown,
And they wither with the wind,
And they crumble in your hand.

Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello,
Good-bye, Good-bye, Good-bye, Good-bye,
That's all there is.
And the leaves that are green turned to brown.

Can't believe I got to 54 without realising Billy Bragg lifted this line..

@Gerard Hempstead yup 67 checkin' in here-man these guys were the soundtrack of my life in the 60's. it is truly amazing how fresh these songs still sound!

I was 21 when I first heard this song. I’m 26 now, but I won’t be for long. My next birthday is just over 3 months away. Been spending a ton of time reflecting on what I’ve done with myself as an adult

Me too....and my late brother and I used to do this son...do it alone now with a harmony box

this song played as i laid on my boyfriend's chest, he looked over to me as they sang the line "my heart was filled with the love of a girl"... he is 22 and for a moment it seemed that the song was written just for us. i cant help but feel that i will recall this moment again some day, when my hair has turned to gray & the leaves that are green turn to brown..

Like it was yesterday you will remember it! And even though your hair may turn gray, you still won't "feel old"-- that's just a trick of the clock and calendar! But each turn, each year, seems to go faster for us humans. I imagine to the leaves, it's all the same (as they only live the one year, so time never gets the chance to start moving faster). May you have a lovely day in several decades when you remember that sweet moment of him singing that to you! And may you feel just as beautiful, though in a different way!

My goodness, Paul Simon has got to be one of THE BEST songwriters of all time.  It's so much fun to go back and listen to his dozens of great tunes; I feel so lucky to have lived through this era and enjoyed his music.

Gary

He's a genius.
