More Than a Woman
Simon & Garfunkel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Machinery screams more than animals

You can't deny its use
Being alone or in concert is its purpose
People resent and comply
Returning to self-destruction
Battered, in pain
But they don't scream

Oh, sure, whimpering and sighs often issue
Late at night but for their own sake
Not for any hope of
Certainly not for any hope

No groups are silent
In personal areas
Nobody screams

Nobody shouts aloud
As a knife splits their spleen
Nobody then survived
As least not from the mouth

Quiet acceptance
More quiet denial
Or some obtuse, perverse pleasure of use

Capable of so much
Whether for good or for evil
Love or hate
Humans deny their use
Because they possess potential for more

The turning of the key
Or the flipping of the switch
The flash of metal
In the moonlight
As it slices flesh

A simultaneous offense

One scream
One scream

Overall Meaning

In Simon & Garfunkel's song "More Than a Woman," the lyrics delve into the concept of the impact of machinery on human life. The opening line, "Machinery screams more than animals," suggests that machines are more vociferous and pervasive than the natural world. This sets the tone for the rest of the song, exploring the contrasting nature of machinery in relation to human existence.

The following lines - "You can't deny its use, Being alone or in concert is its purpose" - convey the undeniable utility of machines in modern society. Whether used individually or in collaboration, machines serve a purpose and are an inseparable part of human life. Furthermore, the lyrics suggest that people both resent and comply with the presence of machines, highlighting the complex relationship humans have with technology.

The subsequent lines - "Returning to self-destruction, Battered, in pain, But they don't scream" - speak of the internal challenges humans face. The reference to self-destruction could symbolize the detrimental effects of relying too heavily on machinery or the consequences of our own actions. Despite the pain experienced, individuals don't vocalize their distress, mirroring the idea that humans often suffer in silence.

Throughout the song, the lyrics touch upon themes of resignation, denial, and the duality of human nature. The repeated lines "Nobody screams" and "Nobody shouts aloud" emphasize the prevailing silence and passive acceptance of the negative aspects of the human condition. The imagery of a knife splitting someone's spleen serves as a metaphorical representation of the harm inflicted on oneself or others through the misuse of machines or technology.

Ultimately, the song seems to suggest that humans possess immense potential through their ability to create and utilize machines. However, they often deny the positive aspects and instead focus on the potential for harm or misuse. The refrain of "One scream, One scream" leaves the listener with a haunting question: Will humanity fully embrace the beneficial capabilities of machines or continue to succumb to their darker consequences?

The most beautiful Simon and Garfunkel Song ever written ! Can't stop listening to it, and can't stop cryin' while i do.

Lyrics
Tom, get your plane right on time
I know your part'll go fine
Fly down to Mexico
Doh-n-doh-de-doh-n-doh
And here I am
The only living boy in New York

I get the news I need on the weather report
Oh, I can gather all the news I need on the weather report
Hey, I've got nothing to do today but smile
De-doh-n-doh-de-doh
And here I am
The only living boy in New York

Half of the time we're gone
But we don't know where
And we don't know where

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh
Here I am

Half of the time we're gone
But we don't know where
And we don't know where

Tom, get your plane right on time
I know that you've been eager to fly now
Hey, let your honesty shine, shine, shine now
Doh-n-doh-de-doh-n-doh

Like it shines on me (Here I am)
The only living boy in New York
The only living boy in New York

Ahhhhhhhhhh
Here I am
Ahhhhhhhhhh
Here I am....

My dad passed away this year during the first lockdown. We weren't allowed to go and see him or anything during his last couple of months alive. I remember this song from a mix tape he made us when I was about 6 and that 'here I am' always resonates with me. As a youngster I imagined it was him saying it and it's even more powerful now. Sorry, I don't usually comment stuff like this on Youtube, but tonight is just one of those nights

@Paulco67

Peace to you and may your Dad always live on in your heart.

@LuziferDiabolus

I'm sorry for your loss. Sometimes it just helps to share your story with others - so don't apologize for that. Much peace to you and your family!
